Your Weekly Gift from LMCC

Collage-LMCC-week5

In this week's curated care package for you, we've selected a far flung cross-section of artistic work and performance.

There's something for everyone, from a moving theatrical event, to the gift of mandalas, visual art that celebrates the music of trees, and satirical video capturing the everyday absurdities of the present moment.

Blued Trees Symphony

"Blued Trees Symphony (2015-) is a performance work made with a forest by painting a musical score on trees. The project poses the question, can the copyright law that protects art be used to protect land in danger of seizure under the rule of eminent domain?" - Art in America, May 2020

Created over a period of years, Blued Trees Symphony continues to be iterated and transformed with different geographies and compositions by LMCC Arts Center Resident Aviva Rahmani.

Aviva and Blued Trees Symphony is featured in the May 2020 issue of Art in America in a lengthy article about artists working with an ecological practice, and she recently received the MAP Fund grant for Blued Trees, Black Skies. Congrats Aviva!

DOEprojekts
Mandalas for a Time of Quarantine

DOEprojekts is the socially-engaged collaborative art practice co-directed by LMCC SU-CASA artists, Deborah Adams Doering and Glenn N. Doering.

Since the start of the stay at home period, DOEprojekts have created beautiful mandalas out of everyday objects. Check these beautiful mandalas on Instagram @DOEprojekts and learn more about their work.

As a way to participate in "Distant Socializing," if you would like DOEprojekts to create or locate a mandala image for you, or a person or people you care about, they are happy to do it as a gift, and send the image to you and/or your friend(s). It may take a bit of time, but they will do it!

Email DOEprojekts@gmail.com and with more about how you hope to use a mandala image, and for whom. They will email and set a schedule.

Stephanie Chou
Comfort Girl

Created and performed by 2018 LMCC Grantee Stephanie Chou, Comfort Girl is an exploration - in song and story - of the lives of Chinese 'comfort women', a cruel euphemism for the women who were abducted and forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese army during WWII.

Comfort Girl is a tribute to these young women’s incandescent courage and indomitable spirit, not only while in captivity during the War but also—in a cruel irony—when they returned home to their families, who didn’t always welcome them back with open arms.

The sold-out show was presented in 2019 at Joe's Pub. Watch this performance of Comfort Girl at Joe's Pub: Live from the Archive this coming Saturday, May 16, 2020, at 8pm.

Eliza Bent

We love the lightness that LMCC Workspace 2018-2019 alum Eliza Bent brings to her quarantine experience through humorous song and poetry.

Check out Eliza's videos on Instagram @getbentobox and get a glimpse of one artist's vignettes of life at home.
