In Open Studios, learn more about multidisciplinary artist Okwui Okpokwasili whose work is influenced by raw and intimate semi-autobiographical text that becomes the seed for an exploration of a movement vocabulary and out of which a narrative in space and language emerges.
“I work at the intersection of dance, theater and installation. Text, movement, sound and space are developed and designed to exist in a charged and dynamic interchange, in an attempt to resist perceived strictures of form and how a body should behave within the codes of these distinct disciplines. And I’m especially interested in exploiting and undermining how the brown body is read within these codes.” – Okwui Okpokwasili
