RehearsalWeek

To be eligible artists must be: 

• A practicing movement artist
• A current New York City resident
• Attend an orientation meeting before beginning the rehearsal period. Orientations generally take place at The Arts Center on Mondays at 10:30am.

• Studios are only available for one-week-long rehearsal sessions; 7 consecutive days from Monday - Sunday.
• Rehearsal schedules for the week must plan to use 30+ hours of studio space for creative development time. 
• Studio space is available for rehearsal only, the studio cannot be used for classes or public showings including works in progress. 
• Only the designated artist and confirmed collaborators may access the space. 
• LMCC’s dance studios are located at The Arts Center at Governors Island in a shared artist residency wing.
• The dance studios support up to 15 people in the room maximum.
• We are not able to support percussive dance at this time. 
• Artists may only book two weeks maximum in the 2024 calendar year. 
• The studio is dedicated to one designated artist for the full week. Materials and belongings may be kept in the studio. The studio will not be used for any other activities or by any other artist during the rehearsal week.
• The Arts Center at Governors Island is open when the Governors Island ferry is running; Monday - Sunday, 7am to 10pm. All artists and collaborators must depart the island by the last ferry. 
  • Ferries operate to and from the Battery Maritime Building (BMB) to Governors Island daily. Please note: this schedule is subject to change. You can refer to the Governors Island website for most up-to-date information. Click on the green "Show Evening Ferry Schedule" button to see the tenant (LMCC artist) only hours.

LMCC’s Arts Center at Governors Island is a refurbished 1870s munitions warehouse now containing artist studios, exhibitions spaces, a cafe and LMCC offices. As such, working at the Arts Center is very much about sharing space and being in community. 

The dance studios are located on the Upper Level of the Arts Center, in a private section of the building which is inaccessible to the public. The studios are located on a single level with a flat surface. All studios and hallways are wheelchair accessible. 

STUDIO FEATURES:

• Studio Size: approximately 30 ft x 34 ft
• Sprung wood dance floor with marley surface
• Windows on two sides of the dance studio and well lit with natural lighting, as well as overhead LED lights
• Speaker for music playback
• 1 Table & 3 Chairs are provided in the studio

Additionally, the common area of the Arts Center Studios includes:  

• A shared kitchen - equipped with basic cooking necessities, utensils, first aid kits/PPE and cleaning supplies.
• Common areas with couches for more comfortable seating.
• Bathrooms are located on the same level as the studios in the public lobby and meet ADA standards.

Getting to Governors Island and LMCC’s Arts Center 

• All ferries going to and from Governors Island, as well as the grounds of the island itself, meet ADA standards. 
• The ferry ride from the Battery Maritime Building (Manhattan) to Soissons Landing (ferry terminal) at Governors Island takes under 10 minutes. 
• The Arts Center is the first building to the right of Soissons Landing. Getting to the studios takes approximately 3-5 minutes, either up the hill to Andes Road and a right turn to the building’s Upper Level entrance or via the ramp directly to the right of the ferry landing to the building’s Lower Level entrance and elevator to the Upper Level.  
• The studios are accessible via two entrances on Andes Road: 
  • Second set of white double doors - please note this entrance requires climbing a set of 5 steps. 
  • Last set of white double doors - this entrance includes an ADA compliant ramp.

Access to food on Governors Island is limited and many food vendors are either open only during the summer months or located 15-minutes walking or wheeling distance from the studio. It is therefore recommended that Artists bring food with them when coming to the Island.
