To kick off the 2021 River To River Festival, LMCC will honor the great jazz legend, Wayne Shorter. esperanza spalding, Terri Lyne Carrington and Leo Genovese will come together to celebrate Shorter with a performance at The Clemente.
Following the concert, please join us in the Flamboyán Theater for the premiere of WS, a longer super nova directed by Arthur Jafa. This film chronicles an ongoing and intimately wild conversation between Shorter and esperanza spalding as they collaborate on building a new opera, Iphigenia. esperanza spalding (also known as irma nejando, or, i.e.) is a being who has grown to recognize love in the abstract and aspirational, and is now fully dedicated to learning how she can serve and embody actualized love through honor for and receptivity to, fellow humans, teachers, and practitioners of various regenerative arts.
bass, piano, composition, performance, voice and lyrics are tools and disciplines she is engaged in deeply to cultivate her own channel for transmitting care and beauty through vibration/sound/presence.
she has written an Opera with Wayne Shorter slated for premier in Fall 2021 // she is currently developing a mockumentary in collaboration with brontë velez and San Francisco Symphony // researching and developing liberation rituals in jazz and black dance // and continuing a lifelong collaboration with practitioners in various fields relating to music, healing and cognition to develop music with enhanced therapeutic potential.
she is presently paid by Harvard University to co-create and learn with students enrolled here, working on developing creative practices that serve the restoration of people and land.
Terri Lyne Carrington is a 2021 NEA Jazz Master and three-time Grammy award-winning drummer, composer, producer, and educator. She is a Professor at Berklee College, serving as Founder and Artistic Director of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice, and artistic director for the Carr Center in Detroit, MI. In 2013 she won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album for Money Jungle: Provocative in Blue, which established her as the first woman ever to win in this category. She has performed on over 100 recordings and has toured and recorded with luminaries such as Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Stan Getz, Esperanza Spalding, and numerous others. Her current band project, Terri Lyne Carrington + Social Science released their debut album, Waiting Game, in 2019 which was nominated for a 2021 Grammy Award. Ms. Carrington is an honorary doctorate recipient from Berklee College and Manhattan School of Music.
Leo Genovese was born in Argentina in 1979. He moved to the United States in 2001.
He has been traveling the world playing music for the last twenty years.
He has eight albums as a leader and dozens as a sideman.
He believes in music as a force of change.
He practices the saxophone in hotel rooms.
He doesn't support MP3 culture.
He cooks pretty spicy food, like his music.
