Symmetrical Lives
Saturday, October 1, 2022 at 11:30AM, 1PM, 3:30PM
Abby's Lawn, Fort Tryon Park, 99 Margaret Corbin Drive, New York, NY 10040

Symmetrical Lives is a site-specific music and movement installation of an innovative production of J. S. Bach’s beloved Orchestral Suite in B Minor. The music is performed by flute soloist Zara Lawler and violin soloist Maja Cerar who both dance and play at the same time, accompanied by string trio (Rebecca Fischer, violin; Colin Brookes, viola; Alexis Gerlach, cello). The dance was created with choreographer C. Neil Parsons, and is an adaptation of the group’s 2021 short film, Symmetrical Lives, which premiered as part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Balcony Bar from Home series.

Symmetrical Lives emerged from the pandemic experience and the artists’ desire to be together safely in a natural environment that afforded freedom of expression and room to play, and parallels the experience of many New Yorkers who sought out parks as sanctuary to counterbalance the isolation we all were feeling socially, artistically and even spiritually.

Good Medicine
Friday, October 7, 2022 at 7:00PM
Theatre Row, 410 West 42nd Street New York, NY 10036

Good Medicine is an interactive satire on the American medicine show through the centuries. The story is about three characters: Reverend Beauford T. Jones, Dr. Chester C. Braman, and Kurt Candleman, Spiritual Advisor and Master Guru. They all exist in different periods of history and are trying to sell their philosophies and products for health. The show exposes the similarities between the characters even though they are from different centuries showing that today we have the same snake oil salesmen as in the 19th century, with absurd products which claim to heal and cure.

25 Years After the Hong Kong Handover: NYC Chinese American Artists Respond in Images, Words & Music
Friday, October 14, 2022 from7:00-9:00PM
Church Street School of Music & Art Performance Space, 41 White St, New York, NY 1001

In this year, the 25th Anniversary year of the “Hong Kong Handover” from Great Britain back to China, Chinese American artists will gather in Manhattan––the isle that Hong Kong has been most compared to through the years––to explore Hong Kong’s relationship with and impact on NYC’s Chinese American community…through images (moving and still), words (spoken and sung) and music. The goal is to create a safe space to share and process personal experience as well as the historic precedents that planted the seeds of anti-Asian American laws and biases that have been festering in this country since Asians first arrived. Participating artists: Chen Yi & Zhou Long (symphonic composition via video); Alvin Eng (acoustic punk raconteur); Nina Kuo (painting); Lorin Roser (video art/installation); Sammy Yuen (artist/illustrator); and Xu Xi 許素細 (novelist/essayist, longtime HK chronicler).

HARLEM MEET AFRICA- THE SONGS OF HOPE AND HEALING
Sunday, October 16, 2022 at 3:00PM
Richard Rodgers Amphitheater, 18 Mt Morris Park W, New York, NY 10027

For the past two years, the world has endured loneliness through the pandemic. More than ever, it’s essential to bring light into people’s lives. Harlem is a historical neighborhood where Africans, African Americans, and everyone from across the globe live side by side. While it is still trending as a fun place to go, Harlem has been labeled as inaccessible or unsavory for decades. It’s time for a change. Our goal is to have ALL of New York experience Harlem’s culture, beauty, diversity, LOVE and community through the healing power of music.

We’re staging a FREE concert of powerful music and delivering a warm invitation to join us for:

“Harlem Meet Africa” featuring Natu Camara and her exciting Afro-Rock and soul band.

Joining Natu will be THE WAITERS OF HAPPINESS, the popular Harlem Funk and R&B dance band, along with the HARLEM DRUMLINE, led by Master Drummer Mamadou from Burkina Faso. Also bringing joy to this festive event will be professional drummers and percussionists from Guinea, Senegal, Mali and Burkina Faso, local school dance groups and several talented artists representing the soul of Africa and Harlem. This is a homegrown event entirely self funded so we need help to fund it. We want to keep the show free for all in the New York Area.

Turkish Tunes in Manhattan: Ballrooms of Istanbul
Friday, October 28, 2022 at 3:00PM
Oculus Center at the World Trade Center. 185 Greenwich St, New York, NY 10007

During the early days of the Turkish Republic, in the 1920s, the sounds of Tango, Waltz and Foxtrot started filling the ballrooms and music halls of cities across Anatolia. Turkish songwriters started producing their own compositions in these genres, starting a musical tradition that still continues today. The concert will take the audience on a nostalgic journey to the Ballrooms of Istanbul, showcasing the richness of Turkish contributions to these genres. The concert also marks an important date for our Turkish heritage, commemorating the 99th anniversary of the Republic of Turkiye on October 29, 2022. In addition to presenting Turkish music to New Yorkers, we will be able to celebrate our cultural heritage with them.
