In Memoriam: Frederieke S. Taylor, 1940-2018.

The staff, board, and supporters of LMCC mourn the recent loss of Frederieke S. Taylor.

Throughout her life, Frederieke was a vanguard for NYC arts who brought inspired leadership to LMCC. In 1980, she became the third Executive Director at LMCC, serving until 1986. During this time, LMCC launched the Manhattan Community Arts Grants program.

Frederieke served on LMCC’s Board from 2001 to 2010, after which she became an Emeritus member and advisor to the Board.

Timur Galen, Chair of LMCC’s Board of Directors, spoke to Frederieke’s life on behalf of LMCC: “All of us at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council mourn the passing of Frederieke Taylor, a friend, colleague, mentor and leader. She made an extraordinary contribution to LMCC over a long and distinguished career in the arts, first as our Executive Director, later as a member of our Board of Trustees and most recently as a trusted advisor to the Board. She will be greatly missed.”

In addition to her work at LMCC, Frederieke was a well-known curator who founded her eponymous gallery in Soho in 1998. She also directed the MacDowell Colony and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in the late 80s-early 90s.
