A surprise pop-up performance by renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma, as part of his "Our Common Nature" project, added a new sound to Governors Island's usual soundscape of bird calls, boat horns, and crashing waves on Monday, February 27. Along with composer Angélica Negrón, Yo-Yo Ma visited the Island to learn about the conservation work of tenants Billion Oyster Project, the unique maritime curriculum of Harbor School, and the vision of the Trust for Governors Island and City of New York's Center for Climate Solutions.

Yo-Yo Ma’s Our Common Nature project has held pop-up performances around the United States–including the Grand Canyon, Acadia National Park, the Great Smoky Mountains, and Hawaii–and we are thrilled that Governors Island, a place where all New Yorkers are able to immerse themselves in nature year-round, can play a role in this incredible project.
