As part of our monthly Take Care Series programs, LMCC presents Open Studios and participatory workshops focused on healing at
The Arts Center at Governors Island on October 16 from 12pm-5pm!
From 12-5pm, meet LMCC’s newest cohort of artists-in-residence during Open Studios and preview their works-in-progress. Participate in a celebration of Earth by creating art through environmentally safe, natural elements led by artist Michele Brody at 2pm.
Join Asiya Wadud and Muna Malik in a discussion to create the future that we desire and what it would take to arrive at that place.

Open Studios with Arts Center Artists-in-Residence

Artist Studios, Upper Level
Visit 2021 artists-in-residence in their studios at The Arts Center, where they will share current works-in-progress, offer insights on their creative practice and engaging activities for attendees.
Session Two residents include: Alchemyverse, Noel Caban, Raul De Lara, Rose DeSiano, Valerie Hallier, Ayo Jackson, Erin Johnson, Kirk Maynard, Iris McCloughan, Azita Moradkhani, Narcissister, Roxane Revon, Buket Savci, Gabriel G Torres, and Nathalie Wuerth.
Earth Celebrations: Natural Dye & Eco-Printing Workshop
Participatory Workshop, 1pm-4pm
Studio A4, Upper Level
Create colorful prints with natural elements that don’t harm the environment and celebrate nature's abundance of color this fall. Learn the basics of natural dying and eco-printing fabric with natural pigments. Earth Celebrations artist Michele Brody will engage participants to work with silk and natural fabrics to dye and print with natural pigments such as indigo, fall leaves, fruits and flowers. Flowers and leaves are used to create a contact print releasing their shape and natural color into the fabric.

Muna Malik’s Blessing of the Boats

Muna Malik’s work invites a series of questions about the kind of future that we desire and what it would take to arrive at that place. Inspired by Muna’s prompt “We have an opportunity to set sail towards a new future—what society would you build and how do we get there?” Asiya Wadud works with participants to respond to these two intertwined questions, weaving them into a collective poem.
Earth Celebrations is a non-profit organizations engaging community through the arts to address and mobilize action of vital environmental issues, urban sustainability and climate solutions.
Asiya Wadud is the author of Crosslight for Youngbird, day pulls down the sky/ a filament in gold leaf (written with Okwui Okpokwasili), Syncope and No Knowledge Is Complete Until It Passes Through My Body. Her recent writing appears in e-flux journal, Triple Canopy, BOMB Magazine, Chicago Review, Social Text and elsewhere. Asiya’s work has been supported by the Foundation Jan Michalski, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (River to River: Four Voices 2020; Governors Island Arts Center residency 2019-2020; Process Space 2017), Danspace Project, Brooklyn Poets, Dickinson House, Mount Tremper Arts, and Rosendal Theater (Norway), among others. She lives in Brooklyn, New York where she teaches poetry at Saint Ann’s School, Columbia University, and Pacific Northwest College of Art.
