*2027 Program Guidelines and Application Available Now*
Creative Unrestricted is a Manhattan Arts Grants program that provides unrestricted funding to Manhattan-based individual artists, artist collectives, and small- to mid-sized arts organizations with annual operating budgets under $250,000. The program is designed to strengthen long-term sustainability for artists and cultural organizations that play vital roles in local creative ecosystems.
The program welcomes applications from organizations and artists working within the performing arts field, including all cultural traditions and creative practices in dance, music, theater, and multidisciplinary performance. Funding is intended for artists and small arts organizations with sustained bodies of work who often fall between early stage project grants and the relatively small number of large scale institutional funding opportunities available in the field. Funds may be applied towards building organizational capacity, administrative infrastructure, or the broader conditions required to develop high-quality artistic work.
Creative Unrestricted funding is provided in part by the Howard Gilman Foundation and an anonymous foundation.

Application Section IA: About the Applicant
If I’m applying to Creative Unrestricted, can I also apply for the other MAG grants in the same cycle?
No. You may only submit ONE proposal for project funding or general operating support.
Do I need to work in a specific arts discipline to be eligible for this program?
Artists and nonprofit arts organizations that work in the performing arts (dance, theater, music, and multidisciplinary performing arts) are eligible to apply. Those who work in visual arts, media/new media, and literary arts exclusively are not eligible.
Application Section IB: Artistic Work Samples
What samples should I submit?
Well-documented samples of past, completed work that reflect your creative practice or body of work, in general. Audio / video samples are highly encouraged for performing arts applicants. If providing a recording is not possible, you may provide still image or text samples (i.e. a playscript, libretto, etc.).
I am a theatre artist worried about the Actors Equity Association (AEA) rules on video documentation. What should I do regarding work samples?
Every code and contract with AEA contains specific media rules, so make sure to check your contract first or contact them directly with further questions. If your contract or code does not allow filming or taping, contact the AEA Media Department to inquire about acquiring a Media Agreement for grant-seeking purposes. Can I submit a video compilation of multiple excerpts as one of my work samples?
Highly edited compilation videos or promotional reels, often featuring voiceover narration or music not present in the live presentation of the work, are not acceptable work samples.
Is it ok to submit samples that were not professionally documented?
Yes. It is important that the quality of the sample be high enough, so the jury is not distracted by the documentation itself and is able to focus on the artistic work being presented. Very pixelated or blurry samples, or those with dark lighting, a shaky camera, or showing audience members leaving early, are not suitable work samples.
How do I password-protect my audio or video samples?
On Vimeo and SoundCloud, make the recording “private.” On YouTube, make the recording “unlisted.” To change the privacy settings of the YouTube video, please visit YouTube Help. Be sure to provide any necessary passwords in the application form and keep your online samples accessible with the same password through March 2027.
Submittable
I’m new to Submittable. How do I create and manage a Submittable account?
We recommend watching this Quick Video Tutorial for an overview on how to create an account, start your application, and manage your submissions. Submittable’s Help Articles also have quick tutorials on topics such as how to sign in to your Submittable account, how to download a copy of your submission, and how to change the email associated with your Submittable account.
LMCC’s grant applications are hosted on the Submittable platform. According to their website,
Submittable attained a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (or VPAT), affirming that their platform is accessible to a wide range of submitters with disabilities. Submittable’s VPAT follows industry standards outlined in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0. WCAG is maintained by the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium). VPAT verifies that Submittable is accessible to a wide range of submitters with disabilities, including blindness and low vision, deafness and hearing loss, learning disabilities, cognitive limitations, limited movement, speech disabilities, photosensitivity, and combinations of these. Submittable pages and forms are configured to be navigated using keyboard commands associated with a wide variety of browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer) and screen reader applications. Site pages and public-facing forms are built with ARIA labels, and the default settings for text, buttons, and hyperlinks follow WCAG guidelines for color contrast.
Once you have created an account, you will be able to complete the application. Please connect the account to an email you check regularly. LMCC staff will contact you with questions, follow-up requests, and official grant notifications through this portal.
Most people don’t complete the whole application all at once. You can use the “Save Draft” button at the bottom of the form at any point and return to your work.
You will know that your submission was successful because you will receive a confirmation email. It will have a link to an optional survey about your experience. The survey is for us to learn about how the process went for you and how we can make it better. It is anonymous and fully separated from your application.
Review Process
Who makes funding decisions?
Recommendations for LMCC's Manhattan Arts Grants are made through a panel selection process designed to ensure applicants are funded based on their ability to address the program's criteria. LMCC is committed to convening panelists whose expertise and backgrounds reflect the cultural and creative diversity of the applicant pool, including artistic genre and form, racial, ethnic and cultural background. The panel is comprised of artists, cultural workers, and arts professionals with knowledge and familiarity of Manhattan’s neighborhoods and communities. Only eligible and complete applications are reviewed by the panel.
How does LMCC select panelists?
LMCC broadly seeks to engage panelists with experience in any of the following areas:
- Contemporary artists and companies advancing their form or curators/programming entities with related goals
- Folk and traditional artists and companies carrying their practices forward or curators/programming entities with related goals
- Grassroots arts groups providing arts events for a specific community or audience base
- Non-arts organizations with a history of providing arts programming to their community
- Arts enrichment for youth, creative aging, or workshops/participatory programs for adults
LMCC engages over 50 jury members each year for the Manhattan Arts Grants. If you are interested in serving as a panelist or nominating someone else for service, please complete or share LMCC’s Panel Nomination form.
Will my funding history with LMCC be considered by the panel?
No. All applications are reviewed and considered equally within the same applicant pool and based on the information provided in the online application form. Having received support from LMCC in the past does not make your application more competitive in the applicant pool. Additionally, having received support from LMCC in the past does not guarantee support in subsequent years.
