Sidewalk Storybooks : Lower East Side Edition is a public viewing of SU-CASA student work created during 12-weeks of afternoon classes with art, tea, and cakes, taught and baked by Joy Lau. The multicultural and multilingual group of students at the L.E.S. Weinberg Center created, colored, and collaged books displaying their stories with details reflective of their daily lives in the quickly changing neighborhood.

Celebrating Our Books From the Recipe/Remedy Workshop

A showing of handmade books containing family recipes and remedies. Cyanotypes, painting, collage and pop-up are incorporated into the books, which have many different structures. Come share the stories of the process, and food memories.

There will also be a gallery of visual stories, maps, and drawings that capture the different maps of our lives available for viewing.

It’s a Swing Dance Event! Live Band, Swingadelic! Performance by our own Cool Cats! See what they’ve been up to these months! EVERYONE’S included dancing, with a swing lesson in the beginning, and off to a hi-de-ho as cheering the Cool Cats in their Big Apple Dance. We’ve got the Shim Sham too! Afterward open dancing to the band! Bring your truckin’ finger and your swag! And we’re topping it off with ice cream sundaes!

In this powerful final event we will use various forms of self-expression and performance-based pedagogy to display visual messages based on the stories of the participants, to compose a symbolic critical mass as a collective message, as a form of popular demand. What is denied in our stories can be claimed and shared as an act of collective reparation through the art of expressing ourselves.

Our Hands Our Stories - Exhibition

Over the course of two months, participants in the Our Hands Our Stories project at Meltzer Center in the East Village have learned embroidery techniques and made patchwork pieces while sharing stories. On June 29th those pieces will be on display in the common area of the center, stitched together to make one communal tapestry. Please join us to celebrate the work of the members who have made this artwork ! Refreshments will be provided.

An opening reception will be held Friday June 30th from 10 am to 1 pm at Lillian Wald Older Adult Center. This exhibition is the culmination of work created by senior artists during art classes led by teaching artist Julia Justo. This exhibition features textiles and mixed media pieces exploring different themes that produce compelling works to communicate their ideas.

On Friday, June 30th, Filmmaking at JASA will present brief excerpts of video and audio recordings captured as part of the SU-CASA Filmmaking workshop. The culminating event will also be a filmmaking “experience” that anyone attending can participate in. There will be stations set up to capture on-camera and audio recordings of participating guests around the theme of birthdays.

Documentary Theatre Ensemble Performance

Join the Carter Burden Center For The Aging documentary theatre ensemble for a final performance of material created by our spring 2023 participants. The 45-minute performance will include theatre, poetry, comedy, and multimedia work written and created by participants in our weekly Friday documentary theatre workshops. The final performance is directed by teaching artists Ash Marinaccio and Maria Litvan.

The Power of Inspirational Music

Participants in the workshop "The Power of Inspirational Music" will present a choral concert of gospel music and other song favorites which empower and motivate. The performance is the culmination of a four-month study of gospel music; recognizing how oppressed people throughout centuries crafted a song style which continues to bring joy and compassion among diverse members of a shared community. Experience an authentic Japanese festival with traditional Bon Odori dances, including new dances created by students from Westbeth Older Adults Center! Bon Odori dances are simple and easy to learn, so anyone can join in and dance with our incredible students. These new dances are culled from each student's experiences and tell the story of each of their lives.
