We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of artist Bettina Grossman, who was a guest artist in the 2019 exhibition at the Arts Center at GovernorsIsland, The Power of Two Suns by Yto Barrada.

Simply known as “Bettina,” she was legendary artist whose prolific body of work includes sculpture, photography, painting, printmaking, film, drawing, and text. Based on the observation of the city’s daily activities, her work transforms movements and gestures into form in an effort to apprehend the elusive, transitory energies of urban life. For many decades, Bettina lived and worked in isolation in The Chelsea Hotel. In 2019, we were fortunate to present her work and that of artist Yto Barrada, who re-introduced Bettina's work to new audiences, at The Arts Center at Governors Island.

Thank you Bettina for your lifelong pursuit of art.

Work by Bettina is now on view in Greater New York, MoMA PS1’s survey of artists living and working in the New York City area through April 18, 2022.
