The third season of andPlay (in) conversation, a free virtual series, explores the intimate experience of creating art as a duo. On October 3, the first event this year invites Shepherdess, Kayleigh Butcher (mezzo-soprano) and Hajnal Pivnick (violin), to discuss duo origin stories, approaches to commissioning. Musical performances will be shared by both andPlay and Shepherdess. On October 17 String Noise, Pauline Kim Harris and Conrad Harris (violins) are invited to discuss discovering a duo sound, punk transcriptions, and composer/performer/improviser identity. Join us as we celebrate dance and human connection! Barkin/Selissen Project presents Accidental Suite, a live ensemble dance work conceptualized by choreographers Kyla Barkin and Aaron Selissen, set to an original score by Zac Selissen. An exploration of connection, Accidental Suite evokes chance encounters, remote impressions, near misses, and the magnetic push and pull of relationships. This striking expansion of the film from the “Titles Project” builds relational tension through increasing levels of contact and lush intertwining vignettes that tap into the most essential of human needs, connecting to one another!

Tilted Axes: Music for Mobile Electric Guitars

Tilted Axes: Music for Mobile Electric Guitars will present a new performance procession entitled Fabrication in partnership with Theaterlab in NYC’s Garment District. Tilted Axes is a group of guitarists and percussionists lead by classically trained post-rocker Patrick Grant. They perform original music untethered via mini-amps strapped over their shoulders. This event is part of Tilted@10 celebrating Tilted Axes 10th anniversary season. The performance begins at Theaterlab, 357 W 36th in NYC, and will stop along the way at various landmarks to perform special compositions significant to that location.

Mana Manahata is a multi-faceted, multi-disciplinary Pacific Island heritage event that celebrates Pacific Island ancestry and seeks to unify the Pacific Island community in New York City and internationally. Our festival’s schedule of events includes: interactive cultural activities, island craft workshops, dance lessons, lei making tutorials, pareu (sarong) and malo printing and tying, and vendors. Please join us for this rare event in sharing our heritage and play a role in growing and strengthening the New York City Pacific Islander community. This year Mana Manahata will be in conjunction with Indigenous People’s Day Celebration. Come and immerse yourself in the diverse cultures of some of the regions active, native and indigenous artists.

Individually, they perform both classics (by J. S. Bach and Brahms) and contemporary work (by Caroline Shaw), and they improvise as part of their first-ever New York performance together.

Emerging from the pandemic with a live public showing at SOMMWHERE in the Lower East Side, Dance Cartel veterans Ani Taj & Sunny Hitt inhabit a gallery setting as a framework to explore the economics of dance. What practices and presentation models can reimagine dance’s cultural value? The presentation will include original dance NFTs by Taj & Hitt, in collaboration with musician Ian Williams (Battles) and producer super d.pressd, to explore how the public participates in marking the value of dance.

A multidisciplinary experience featuring award-winning artists Leonardo & Olga Suarez Paz, an 11 piece tango-jazz fusion orchestra and Nuevo Tango Ballet. A cross-cultural production, the show connects New York & Buenos Aires and celebrates the centennial of Leonardo’s mentor, Astor Piazzolla, an Argentine-born and New York raised composer, by redefining tango as evolving, daring, artistically complex, and emotionally moving genre - deeply rooted in tradition but with one foot in the next century.

The 1920's were the time of flappers, flamboyance and the face of Alla Nazimova. The Garden Of Alla is a multimedia solo show written and performed by Romy Nordlinger based on the life of Alla Nazimova: Broadway star, Silent Screen legend, producer, director & LGBTQ+ trailblazer. Nazimova was a Jewish Russian immigrant who rose to mammoth heights only to be silenced for 'overstepping her bounds'. Alla returns to stage at the famed NYC venue The Cutting Room to tell it like it was - and still is - in a live silent movie/play with original music by Nick T. Moore, Video Design by Adam Burns & Direction by Lorca Peress.

Narcissus is an original, evening-length ballet set to Nikolai Tcherepnin's score “Narcisse et Echo" composed in 1911 for the Ballets Russes. The work, featuring costume and set designs by Andrew Jordan as well as lighting by Joe Levasseur, incorporates themes of the eponymous Greek myth on which it is based to re-envision the original ballet through a contemporary queer lens. The work, commissioned by New York Live Arts, is performed by a host of renowned contemporary dancers with New York City Ballet principal dancer Taylor Stanley & Cemiyon Barber in the title role.

5 Paths To Uptown Stories

5 Paths To Uptown Stories: Live the experience!! … Reframe your thinking with this dance-theatrical piece presented on a stage that emulates a maze/cage. Audience members will be seated in a way that is aligned with this “cage’s” shape, creating an illusion of being inside of this clear plastic “maze/cage”. Choreographer Elliott Ortiz sets the terms in this “urban playground” of dance, music and drama, with a diverse cast of four dancers, one drag-queen and a jazz singer.

Chat and toast with the artists: A post-performance event is intended to provide an opportunity to engage with the artists in a conversation. On October 29, this post-show conversation will be facilitated by Broadway performer & choreographer Lainie Munro in English. On October 30, the conversation will be hosted by actor and singer Marcelo Rodriguez in Spanish.
