Art in the Cafe

During each public season, The Cafe exhibition space was home to a new installation. This year, we enjoyed there is nothing you can think that is not the moon by Rhonda Weppler and Trevor Mahovsky, which was on view through October 1, 2023.

For this exhibition, Wepler and Mahovsky had built a black cedar shed, a temporary home for glowing objects within it. They had created handmade lanterns, with each object being a replica of antique and vintage items gathered by the artists. The artists used light to animate the shed, revealing life and connection within each object that resided within, lit by changing light patterns that illuminated the through lines that connected and organized them, including type and city of origin. In the coming months, these lanterns were given away to visitors, an offering for the objects to enter into a new phase, beyond their temporary home. The shed remained, housing a new collection of lanterns made by the public over the course of the exhibition.
