New York Mandolin Orchestra

Free Centennial Spring Concert
Thursday, April 28, 2024 at 2:00 PM
The Church of the Holy Trinity, 316 East 88th Street, New York, NY 10128

On Sunday, April 28, the New York Mandolin Orchestra will celebrate its first 100 years with a centennial concert. The performance will feature classical, jazz, traditional, and contemporary music, as well as original compositions by orchestra members. There will also be the premiere of “Passage Work,” by Catherine Hawkes, commissioned for the orchestra’s centennial.

The orchestra, conducted by Yuanlin Chen, has been in continuous existence since 1924. At that time, there were seven mandolin orchestras in New York City. Today there is only one, featuring a unique combination of instruments: mandolin, mandola, mandocello, mandobass, and guitar. They will all be on display on April 28.

Thanks to generous funding from a Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Creative Engagement grant, there will be no charge for admission (up to venue capacity of approximately 400).

Church of the Holy Trinity, 316 East 88th Street, between 1st and 2nd Avenue, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
