Visit Manuel Plaza, and Learn a Bit of City History, Thanks to BGX!
LMCC Alumni Kamau Ware's project Black Gotham Experience continues to expand significantly, involving experiences and work with partners to foster education and awareness about the earliest Black population and communities in New York City, and community and civic activism, multidisciplinary arts work and walking tours, among many other aspects of the project.
Recently, Kamau petitioned the city government and helped push for the naming of Manuel Plaza to be named in honor of five Black men among 28 recipients of land grants in the area earned by people of African descent between 1643 and 1663, each of them having been named Manuel.
Manuel Plaza is located at E 4th St. bet. Lafayette St. and Bowery.
