The Festival of Chinese Opera 2024 - Resounding Opera Classics

The performances will showcase 9 excerpts from renowned classic Cantonese Operas. The highlight of the performance will be the participation of Ms. Lau Wai Ming, a distinguished Hong Kong Opera Star, who will perform 5 excerpts with our local Opera talents. Ms. Lau's collaboration with our New York-based Opera artists promises to be an electrifying experience for our community. Furthermore, we are excited to announce the inclusion of Children's Cantonese Opera. We will have two child Opera stars from Ms. Lau's prestigious Children's Opera school performing two well-known excerpts from the opera classics. The Children's performance is guaranteed to captivate the entire community's attention and hearts.

Come enjoy a short one-person, uplifting and comedic play followed by a conversation with 24/6: A Jewish Theater Company's Artistic Director. During COVID, the effects of social isolation have been acutely felt by senior citizens and those who are housebound. In response, 24/6: A Jewish Theater Company has commissioned a diverse group of over 20 playwrights to write 10 minute plays which are performed live over the telephone to seniors and those who are housebound. Each Monday at noon a different play will be performed via DOROT's University Without Walls.

Pop-Up Memory Book

The “Pop-up Memory Book,” encourages older adults to open their body and mind and use the skills they have learned in each session of their multi-week Creative Learning workshop to create a visual diary of their memory in the form of a pop-up book. This tangible keepsake is an interactive art form that can be used as a memory prompt for them in lifetime storytelling, engaging the curiosity of listeners and delighting both the teller and the audience. The fantastic and meaningful works of art created by participants of the workshop will be shared with the public during a culminating event on July 10, 2024 at Mott Street Older Adult Center.

THE DISABILITY HIP HOP JAM

Join us at Central Park for a day filled with incredible performances! The Disability Pride Month Hip Hop Jam, an annual event hosted by the 4 Wheel City Foundation, is set to ignite the stage with the vibrant talents of disabled hip hop artists. Held during Disability Pride Month in July, this dynamic gathering is scheduled to take place on July 14, 11 am to 4 pm at the Central Park Bandshell as part of the Disability Unite Festival.
4 Wheel City Foundation, spearheaded by Namel “Tapwaterz” Norris and Ricardo “Rickfire” Velasquez, distinguished wheelchair users due to spinal cord injuries, is at the forefront of advocating for disability rights and social change through music. This upcoming event serves as a curated platform to amplify the voices and narratives of disabled artists within the hip hop culture.
The Disability Pride Month Hip Hop Jam embodies a spirit of acceptance, inclusion, and awareness, shedding light on the contributions of disabled artists to the hip hop community. Namel and Ricardo, known for their empowering music, have utilized hip hop as a powerful tool to raise consciousness on accessibility, discrimination, and resilience. Through their personal journey, 4 Wheel City exemplifies how hip hop can drive conversations and facilitate change. As hosts of the Disability Pride Month Hip Hop Jam, Namel and Ricardo extend their mission to provide a supportive and empowering space for disabled hip hop artists to showcase their talents and stories.

I'm Gonna Say It Now is a 5-session songwriting workshop for students (ages 13 - 18) to learn how to write action-driven lyrics. Students are encouraged to express and explore their own feelings surrounding social justice issues. At the end of our week together, students will have the opportunity to share their songs with family members and their community. Class is intended for students ages 13-18 in Harlem. All are welcome to attend the Final Sharing.
