DESCRIPTION:Join curator Meghana Karnik for an exhibition tour followed by a reading of Unity Newspaper (2024)\, a new publication by Hope is a discipline artist Maggie Wong.  \nWong’s installation\, The Red what reading did re-adding stems from the artist’s intergenerational study of the League of Revolutionary Struggle (M-L) and present parts of the publication\, Unity Newspaper (2024)\, published by Snake Hair Press and Orbis Editions. The publication combines sections of the League’s original newspaper (1978-1992) with new writing from League members\, as well as interviews with children raised in the League’s childcare system. The title of Wong’s work borrows from League member and revolutionary poet Amiri Baraka to consider how we come to know a political inheritance. SUMMARY:Tropical Frequencies Exhibition Tour\, Dance Workshop and Experimental Performance Show
DESCRIPTION:Curator Kiara Cristina Ventura will lead an exhibition tour of Tropical Frequencies at 12:30pm\, followed by an exciting lineup of programs inspired by themes of family\, home\, and ancestral roots woven together in the exhibition.   \nDIDIDADA\, movement workshop by artist Coco Villa\n2:30 – 4:30 pm  \nConducted in follow-along style and guided improvisation\, it is a celebration of nonsensical play. DIDIDADA prioritizes accessibility and silliness to give your mind\, body\, and spirit a sparkly mega boost through a variety of multidisciplinary exercises. It is about catharsis\, getting back into our bodies\, and simply dancing for the joy of moving through hyper warm ups\, routines\, and prompts. Instruction is inspired by Caribbean dance styles\, dance fitness\, somatic movement practices\, and self proclaimed rituals.  \nThis workshop is open to all skill levels\, ages 5 and up. There is no choreography. DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Opening: Love Tapes by Wendy Clarke\n12-5pm\, Lower Gallery\, The Arts Center at Governors Island \nFirst exhibited as a part of LMCC’s World Views residency program in 1980 at the World Trade Center\, Love Tapes by Wendy Clarke is one of the earliest and actively ongoing projects that LMCC has supported. \nLove Tapes is a participatory video art project that has captured the ideas\, beliefs and stories about love from everyday people. For almost five decades\, Clarke has documented these intimate and vulnerable stories amassing a collection of over 2500 tapes. Each tape is a reminder of our shared humanity and that love unites us all. \nFor the 2024 exhibition season\, LMCC will present digitized archival footage of Love Tapes on our social media platforms and on site at the Arts Center at Governors Island. Further accessibility information can be found here. \nChoreographer mayfield brooks presents two works–whale fall abyss in the cargo hold of the Tall Ship Wavertree\, calling up ghosts and ancestors from the intersecting histories of whalers and slave ships and whale fall reckoning in the Upper Gallery of The Arts Center at Governors Island. Using found objects\, sound\, light\, movement and projection\, brooks conjures an abyssal underwater world that transforms the formerly munitions storage warehouse into an imagined site of the decomposed whale. \nBoth presentations are a culmination of brooks’ project Whale Fall\, originally commissioned by Abrons Arts Center and virtually premiered as an experimental dance film in 2021 during the height of the Covid-19 epidemic. When Whale Fall (the film) premiered brooks wrote\, “This project was born out of a desire to sit with grief and rage in a world that discards too much and consumes too much. As a result\, the bodies of whales and the bodies of Black folk seem to have a kinship in how they have been both targeted\, hunted and consumed since the transatlantic slave trade. I have also come to know that some slave ships were used as whaling vessels.” In this present moment of continued environmental destruction caused by war and accelerated global warming\, brooks is asking\, “What light reaches us? What darkness welcomes the reckoning?”  \nAfter four years of rigorous research and numerous iterations\, brooks’s ever evolving project Whale Fall continues to decompose itself. This iteration lives as a call to the wild parts of ourselves\, a denouement to complacent attitudes towards death and decay. How are we  entangled in the ruse of romance with our compulsion to consume and our dependence on war machines? Why do we continue to kill?  How can the whale fall reorient us to face our own mortality with more compassion? brooks considers the whale fall as a reckoning. They imagine their ancestor’s bones mingling with whale bones beckoning us to embrace interspecies care and relation beyond the human. Rather\, we can find peace\, joy and happiness by gazing inwards – and claiming what we have culturally disavowed or denied ourselves permission to actualize. A signature of Delgado’s work\, mirrors and reflective surfaces embellish the installation space as three Goddesses dance in choreographed sequences for connection to the spirit realms and nature. \nAs a whole\, the performance invites audience participants to reflect upon their relationship from the spacious naturescape of Governor’s Island\, just a heartbeat away from the city and its perpetual chaos. Audience members are invited to “go within” and join the three Artists in self-reflective exploration of the Goddess within\, an ancient path to liberation… \nThe performance will formally begin in the outdoor gallery space\, whereby the artists will interact with found natural objects on the island\, including each other\, vacillating between contact dance and other dance-based movements. Eventually the piece moves indoors\, where inspired by the natural elements and sounds of magical Governors Island\, a trinity of female artists connect and activate the surroundings through movements based in Yoga – including Breath of Joy meditation\, various nature-based asanas and group exercises. A video installation capturing the water in front of the Statue of Liberty that is also connected to Governors Island will be projected. Reminding us that life is fluid and pure. Rhonda and Trevor invite you to take home one of these unique lanterns\, a rare opportunity to receive an artwork and give these lanterns an extended life. The parade of illuminated lanterns leaving the exhibition will create a scattering of light\, reminiscent of traditional lantern festivals.  \nThe making and sharing of these lanterns is an evolving aspect of the duo’s practice\nwhere they create an economy of copying\, sharing and remaking objects. The current lanterns will be replaced by lanterns visitors have made during special workshops with Rhonda\, that replicate objects they have lost or given away.
