Siyaka Taylor-Lewis is a New York-based photographer. He was trained in film/darkroom techniques and uses those principles in the digital realm. Through one of his recent works Black + Female: Post-Obama he pushes the limits of his understanding of color, light, and shadow to create photographs of high aesthetic value – photographs that tell the stories of the black women’s lives as being “different” or “outsiders” in the larger society. His solo exhibitions include Black + Male: Post Obama…, Brecht Forum and Charles Drew Educational Complex.
His grants and awards include the Scholastic Silver Medal for Photography; an AIGA scholarship award for Photography, for his first conceptual work Welcome to Washington Heights; and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Manhattan Community Arts Fund (MCAF) and Fund for Creative Communities (FCC) grants. He earned a B.F.A. in Photography at the School of Visual Arts.
