Ruta Butkute (b.1984) is an Amsterdam-based artist from Kaunas, Lithuania. Her work explores the meaning of space and object; frequently it takes the shape of sculpture as represented through varying media such as video and photography. Butkute’s solo exhibitions include The logic of Ground, Inkijk Gallery, Amsterdam (2012). Her group exhibitions include SUM, Het Langhuis Gallery, Zwolle, NL (2011); Recollected, ZET Foundation, Amsterdam (2011); and Form to Attribute, CBK Zuidoost, Amsterdam (2011).
Butkute has been an artist-in-residence at CRIDA (2011) and CBK Zuidoost Center of Visual Arts (2011). She received a Start Scholarship from the Mondrian Fund for Visual Artists (2012), was named ‘Best of Graduates’ at Gerrit Rietveld Academie, and was nominated for the Gerrit Rietveld award in 2010. Publications include Balears, Mister Motley, Parool, and Keramiek. Butkute has received B.F.A.s from Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts, and Hacettepe University.
During her Swing Space residency at Governors Island, Butkute will expose memory as narrative material by exploring how one material shapes another through manipulation of placement and meaning.
