luciana achugar is a Brooklyn-based choreographer from Montevideo, Uruguay whose work explores the relationship between aesthetics and ideology. achugar began making work collaboratively with dance artist Levi Gonzalez in 1999, and in 2002 she started working independently. Her works have been presented by several venues and programs that showcase contemporary dance in NYC including The Kitchen, Dance Theater Workshop (now New York Live Arts), Danspace Project, Abrons Arts Center and the River To River Festival, as well as in CANADA Gallery; in Cambridge, MA at the Green Street Studios; in Minneapolis, MN at the Walker Art Center and The Southern Theater; at Portland’s Institute of Contemporary Art during their Time-Based Art Festival and in numerous theaters in Uruguay. She is an artist-in-residence in LMCC’s Extended Life Dance Development (2013-2014, 2015-2016). Her awards include two New York Dance Bessie Awards (2006, 2010). Her work PURO DESEO was chosen as one of TimeOut NY’s Best of Dance (2010) and she was one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” (2011). achugar has received support and recognition from several foundations including the Foundation for Contemporary Art; the New York Foundation for the Arts; the Jerome Foundation; the Multi-Arts Production Fund; The Field Dance Fund; LMCC’s Presidentʼs Award (2009) and a Brooklyn Arts Exchange “passing it on” Artist Award from Tere Oʼ’Connor.
