Joan La Barbara is a composer, performer, sound artist, and actor who creates work in music and interdisciplinary theater. In recent years, La Barbara has worked in collaboration with Kathleen Supové (concert pianist), Aleksandar Kostic (filmmaker), and Marija Plavsic-Kostic (set and costume designer) on several projects. Some of these projects include Persistence of Memory, a film by Kostic with music by La Barbara which premiered at MaerzMusik festival Berlin, Germany (2012) and Storefront Diva, part of Digital Debussy project, music by La Barbara, performance by Supové, set and costumes by Plavsic-Kostic, and video installation by Kostic, Flea Theater, New York, NY. Their most recent collaboration is Parallel Dreams, an endeavor to present visions and sounds inspired by dreams and fantasy, based in the realization that sometimes the threshold between dreams and waking visions blur.

La Barbara’s recent residencies include the Civitella Ranieri Artist Residency Fellowship, Umbria, Italy (2013) and the Guggenheim Fellowship in Music Composition, New York, NY (2004). She received her B.S. in Music Education from New York University.
