The Chinese Musical and Theatrical Association (CMTA) is a New York-based organization founded in 1930 that performs Cantonese opera and inspires Chinese Americans in New York City. Executive Director, Mabel Lem, developed an interest in Cantonese opera music when she was young. She joined the society in 1960, and was trained by CMTA’s previous director Chiu Sik Chung, a famous composer and scriptwriter in Cantonese opera. With the efforts volunteers, CMTA is able to preserve and promote this art form, which dates back to the fourteenth century of the Ming Dynasty. They perform for the public twice a year and hope to continue to introduce this unique art to diverse audiences.
