Distorting referential choreography to reveal new patterns and physical possibilities\, the piece materializes as a Rorschach test of dance. When the movement is stripped down\, what do you see? Get ready to dance! \nAccessibility: This performance will be accessible via a wide staircase and ramp from Pine Street to the south of the Plaza. \nMiguel Gutierrez presents an interactive\, high-energy dance performance complete with group choreography\, aerobics\, and costumes. Come in costume and learn the famous “Aerobicon” dance that Miguel created to Le Tigre’s “Deceptacon” in 2000. Way before TikTok\, this dance was a viral hit in the early days of YouTube that was then recreated by people all over the world in duos\, small groups\, and giant crowds. Miguel will revive this dance and create a powerful public spectacle reminiscent of the cardiovascularly challenging and spiritually charged but now defunct DEEP AEROBICS technique that he taught and disseminated for ten years. This participatory spectacle questions how we keep moving amidst the chaos of everyday life exuberant joy\, and systemic injustice.  \n“Aerobicon” was originally created in collaboration with performer Howie Rigberg. Rather\, we can find peace\, joy and happiness by gazing inwards – and claiming what we have culturally disavowed or denied ourselves permission to actualize. A signature of Delgado’s work\, mirrors and reflective surfaces embellish the installation space as three Goddesses dance in choreographed sequences for connection to the spirit realms and nature. \nAs a whole\, the performance invites audience participants to reflect upon their relationship from the spacious naturescape of Governor’s Island\, just a heartbeat away from the city and its perpetual chaos. Audience members are invited to “go within” and join the three Artists in self-reflective exploration of the Goddess within\, an ancient path to liberation… \nThe performance will formally begin in the outdoor gallery space\, whereby the artists will interact with found natural objects on the island\, including each other\, vacillating between contact dance and other dance-based movements. Eventually the piece moves indoors\, where inspired by the natural elements and sounds of magical Governors Island\, a trinity of female artists connect and activate the surroundings through movements based in Yoga – including Breath of Joy meditation\, various nature-based asanas and group exercises. A video installation capturing the water in front of the Statue of Liberty that is also connected to Governors Island will be projected. Reminding us that life is fluid and pure. Rhonda and Trevor invite you to take home one of these unique lanterns\, a rare opportunity to receive an artwork and give these lanterns an extended life. The parade of illuminated lanterns leaving the exhibition will create a scattering of light\, reminiscent of traditional lantern festivals.  \nThe making and sharing of these lanterns is an evolving aspect of the duo’s practice\nwhere they create an economy of copying\, sharing and remaking objects. The current lanterns will be replaced by lanterns visitors have made during special workshops with Rhonda\, that replicate objects they have lost or given away. DESCRIPTION:A reading and panel discussion with exhibiting artist Daniel Shieh\, poet Chia-Lun Chang\, and authors Lisa Hsiao Chen and Ly Tran.\nSaturday\, August 12\, 3pm\nUpper Gallery at The Arts Center at Governors Island \nDaniel Shieh and Chia-Lun Chang met as LMCC artists in residence at The Arts Center on Governors Island in 2021 and worked together on the exhibition Where Time Runs Backwards currently on view at The Arts Center at Governors Island. Chia-Lun will read a poem written in response to Daniel’s exhibited sculptures and invite Lisa Hsiao Chen and Ly Tran to read excerpts from their work which touch on their personal experiences of how time and memory pass between generations of immigrant families. \nThe four artists and writers will engage in conversation about how their diaspora experiences and political situations have informed their practice. \n——————————————————— \nDaniel Shieh is a Taiwanese-born artist who investigates what is considered foreign to the United States. Through audio and sculptural installations\, he examines key themes in American culture such as the frontier\, nativism\, and space exploration. His immersive installations often take the form of architectural structures that manipulate spatial perception and alter the power dynamics between visitors. Shieh has exhibited at Socrates Sculpture Park\, SPRING/BREAK\, Franconia Sculpture Park\, Josephine Sculpture Park\, and I-Park Foundation. He has been awarded residencies and fellowships at LMCC’s Arts Center at Governors Island\, Bronx Museum of the Arts\, MASS MoCA\, Anderson Ranch\, Fountainhead\, Millay Arts\, ACRE\, and Wassaic Project. He received an MDes from Harvard University and is based in Brooklyn\, New York. \n  \nChia-Lun Chang is the author of Prescribee\, winner of the 2021 Nightboat Poetry Prize\, and two chapbooks\, An Alien Well-Tamed (Belladonna*\, 2022) and One Day We Become Whites (No\, Dear\, 2016). She has received support from Jerome Foundation\, Vermont Studio Center\, Poets House\, Tofte Lake Center\, and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council among others. She teaches contemporary Taiwanese poetry and fiction at the Brooklyn Public Library. Born and raised in New Taipei City and Puli\, she lives in New York City. \n  \nLisa Hsiao Chen is the author of Activities of Daily Living (W.W. Norton)\, a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award for Debut Novel and the Gotham Book Prize and longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize. It was selected by The New Yorker and Vogue as a Best Book of 2022 and as a Top 10 Book of 2022 by Publishers Weekly. Her book of poems\, Mouth (Kaya Press)\, received an Association for Asian American Studies Book Award. She has received support from the Rona Jaffe Foundation\, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council\, the Center for Fiction\, Art Omi: Writers\, and Vermont Studio Center. Born in Taipei\, she now lives in New York City. \n  \nLy Tran graduated from Columbia University in 2014 with a degree in creative writing and linguistics. She has received fellowships from MacDowell\, Art Omi\, and Yaddo. House of Sticks is her first book.

Experience 12 collages of preserved specimens\, from roots to shoots\, and then learn to make your own flower press to take home. You can create a library of plants and flowers (herbarium) that will delight you forever. \nEarth Matter was conceived in spring 2009 to address the dual problems of resource recovery and healthy soils with a single solution: promoting the local composting of organic waste into a healthy soil amendment. We are passionate about resource recovery and healthy soil as primary goals of a 21st century urban environment.

DESCRIPTION:July 22\, 12pm – 2pm & 3pm – 5pm\nJuly 23 12pm – 2pm & 3pm – 5pm\nRSVP is encouraged due to 8 participants capacity limitation per session \nWork with exhibiting artist Rhonda Weppler to build your own lantern during this free workshop! \nWelcoming all ages and abilities into their practice\, participants will resurrect lost objects from memory in this watercolor workshop. The exhibiting artist\, Rhonda Weppler\, will assemble image of participant’s lost objects into lanterns. In the last month of the exhibition\, participant’s lanterns will be exhibited in the shed and transforming the space into the Museum of Lost Things. \nLearn more and RSVP here!
