Part of the nationwide Tempestry Project\, a collaborative fiber arts initiative that turns climate data into striking visual and tactile works\, this collection offers a unique\, hands-on perspective on environmental change. \nCreated by a community of volunteer knitters\, the project features sixteen hand-knitted panels or “tempestries\,” each depicting a full year of the city’s daily temperature data rendered into various colors. The collection weaves together climate storytelling and civic history. The sixteen years selected\, one from each decade spanning from 1870 to the present\, highlight pivotal moments in Madison Square Park’s evolution\, from its 19th-century redesign to the first public Christmas tree lighting in 1912 to its recognition as an accredited Level 2 Arboretum in 2018. \nPresented in partnership with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council at the Arts Center at Govenors Island. \nOn View at the Arts Center May 16 – September 27\, 2026.

DESCRIPTION:An in-process showing of […/+*^%<>€£¥$&@!!!!^^^]\, an immersive performance by Moriah Evans that confronts the body as an ambivalent place of political and existential conundrums. Through a sequence of evolving circumstances—internal and external\, individual and collective—the piece asks what it means to give\, take\, receive\, and be taken through a compositional structure. It circulates bodies\, meaning\, and value through repetition and a par corps of changing relationships between the performers and the public. The work unfolds in a manner that prioritizes non-linear thinking and embodied ways of knowing. The showing will feature collaborators Malcolm-x Betts\, Chloë Engel\, João dos Santos Martins\, and Varinia Canto Vila. \n This work-in-progress showing marks the culmination of Evans’ Arts Center Dance Residency. Learn more about the Chocolate Factory performance here. \nMoriah Evans positions choreography as an expansive social process. Drawing on somatic choreographic practices and feminist critiques of dance and visual culture\, her work expands dance beyond the visible\, to explore different ways of sensing both ourselves and our relationships to one another. Evans develops movement from the unseen interior of the body\, by activating the emotional\, somatic\, and sensory systems to question the default hierarchies between notions of flesh\, body\, self\, and subject. For Evans\, choreography is a social political project that means far more than arranging bodies and movement in space; it is a serious and wide-ranging exploration of ideological beliefs–including feminist\, sociological\, and anthropological considerations. In Evans’ practice\, one work leads to the next\, each project forming a chapter in her ongoing process to inspire transformation–both physically and psychosocially–through action. Evans creates site-specific performances\, theater-based productions\, gallery and museum-based participatory installations\, symposiums\, theoretical texts\, and curatorial projects. \nThis program is supported by Dance/NYC’s Dance Advancement Fund\, made possible by the Howard Gilman Foundation and the Ford Foundation. This project has also been commissioned by and developed\, in part\, during a 2025-2027 Vera List Center Fellowship at The New School. It has been supported by the Vera List Center for Art and Politics. SUMMARY:Lunar Retreat by Nichole Canuso | Branching Paths
DESCRIPTION:Lunar Retreat is a multi-sensory performance inspired by the gradual distance growing between the Moon and Earth. This immersive journey invites audiences to wander\, witness\, and reflect on how we move through care\, loss\, and transformation—both individually and collectively. Created by choreographer Nichole Canuso in collaboration with a visionary team of designers\, Lunar Retreat opens a space for poetic\, playful\, and communal connection with the shifting rhythms of our planetary bodies. Lunar Retreat reflects on our deep evolutionary ties to the ocean and the moon\, reminding us that we are all interconnected with the natural world. \nVia pre-recorded prompts on headset\, audiences are guided through a performance installation that includes live feed video\, individualized activities and moments of group ceremony. While in residence with LMCC\, Nichole and her collaborators will be in the research and development phase for Lunar Retreat.  \nThe work will be shared in four 45-minute intervals (12:30pm\, 1:30pm\, 3pm\, 4pm) for 12 people at a time. Her dedication to dance manifests as performances\, installations\, films and intimate dialogues. Drawing on 15 years of experience as a teaching artist in NYC public schools\, Sari finds joy in sharing their practice and collaborating with diverse communities.  \nAll materials will be provided\, though participants are encouraged to bring clean\, colorful recycled plastics such as shopping bags\, newspaper sleeves\, and toilet paper or paper towel packaging. DESCRIPTION:Step into a space of imagination and invention\, where new hybrid creatures begin to appear! \nUsing images from books and their own drawings\, participants will create collages that merge dinosaurs with present-day animals. \nAs these creatures take shape\, participants enter a world of storytelling and transformation. Together\, these creatures form a speculative bestiary—an imagined collection of living beings that might exist in possible worlds. Each creation becomes a page in this shifting Hybrid Animal Encyclopedia\, a meeting point of memory and invention\, nature and imagination\, past and future. Participants and families take their collages and drawings home\, each holding a personal fragment of this imagined world. \nReservations to help us track interest and capacity are not required but are ENCOURAGED!  \nThe workshop will be ongoing from 1-3pm\, participants are welcome to stop by and stay for as long as they wish. \n\nBased in New York since 2001\, Nobuho Nagasawa is a transnational\, transdisciplinary artist trained in Berlin and invited to the United States by the California Institute of the Arts in 1986. She creates immersive\, site-responsive environments shaped by time\, process\, and collective engagement. Approaching each site like an archaeologist\, she uncovers hidden histories\, ecological and psychological traces within the landscape. Her practice explores how perception\, memory\, and embodied experience shape our sense of place. Nagasawa has received major grants and awards\, including DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service)\, the Rockefeller Foundation\, the California Arts Council\, multiple Japan Foundation grants\, and the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities. Among more than forty completed public art commissions\, she has earned three Design Excellence Awards. A recent project exhibited at MoMA received a dozen awards\, including Woman-Designed NYC. Her work has been exhibited at Prague Castle\, the Ludwig Museum\, the Rufino Tamayo Museum in Mexico\, and the Alexandria Library in Egypt\, and represented in biennials and triennials across Europe\, Asia\, Africa\, and the Middle East. Her commissions include Limon Dance Company\, Whim W’him\, Ririe Woodbury\, Armstrong Now!\, Danspace\, Little Island\, Harlem Stage\, American Dance Festival and beyond. She creates live works\, films\, site-specific/immersive pieces\, and collaborations with musicians such as esperanza spalding\, Trixie Whitley\, Moor Mother\, and Melanie Charles. SUMMARY:Hybrid Animal Encyclopedia
DESCRIPTION:Step into a space of imagination and invention\, where new hybrid creatures begin to appear! \nUsing images from books and their own drawings\, participants will create collages that merge dinosaurs with present-day animals. \nAs these creatures take shape\, participants enter a world of storytelling and transformation. Together\, these creatures form a speculative bestiary—an imagined collection of living beings that might exist in possible worlds. Each creation becomes a page in this shifting Hybrid Animal Encyclopedia\, a meeting point of memory and invention\, nature and imagination\, past and future. Participants and families take their collages and drawings home\, each holding a personal fragment of this imagined world. \nReservations to help us track interest and capacity are not required but are ENCOURAGED!  \nThe workshop will be ongoing from 1-3pm\, participants are welcome to stop by and stay for as long as they wish. \n\nBased in New York since 2001\, Nobuho Nagasawa is a transnational\, transdisciplinary artist trained in Berlin and invited to the United States by the California Institute of the Arts in 1986. She creates immersive\, site-responsive environments shaped by time\, process\, and collective engagement. Approaching each site like an archaeologist\, she uncovers hidden histories\, ecological and psychological traces within the landscape. Her practice explores how perception\, memory\, and embodied experience shape our sense of place. Nagasawa has received major grants and awards\, including DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service)\, the Rockefeller Foundation\, the California Arts Council\, multiple Japan Foundation grants\, and the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities. Among more than forty completed public art commissions\, she has earned three Design Excellence Awards. A recent project exhibited at MoMA received a dozen awards\, including Woman-Designed NYC. Her work has been exhibited at Prague Castle\, the Ludwig Museum\, the Rufino Tamayo Museum in Mexico\, and the Alexandria Library in Egypt\, and represented in biennials and triennials across Europe\, Asia\, Africa\, and the Middle East. Artist activations will take place throughout the day\, including a hands-on art-making workshop\, listening experience and work-in-progress performance. \n  \nAugust Open Studios Artist Activations: \nLisa Ann Schonberg\, The Insects are Present | All-Day\nA work-in-progress listening experience based on Lisa’s sonic research on the rich compost habitats at Earth Matter on Governors Island\, of pollinators at the Lavender Field\, and of ants making their homes under walkways. The Insects are Present is a public installation of a modular\, generative composition system of recording\, processing and playback that prompts interactions between real-time environmental sounds\, human messages\, and Schonberg’s percussion\, with a focus on hidden soundscapes of insects and other invertebrates. \nTijay Mohammed\, Layers of Labor | 1-3pm\nArt-Making Workshop | Inspired by Tijay’s ongoing collage series honoring the often-unrecognized labor of food couriers. Participants will use recycled paper and fabric scraps from his studio to create layered compositions celebrating the professions\, work\, and contributions of their loved ones. DESCRIPTION:Create a colorful\, one-of-kind wearable accessory from recycled plastic that celebrates your individual NYC style! Arts Center Resident Artist Sari Nordman addresses eco-anxiety through environmental art projects that foster social engagement and utilize recycled plastic. The piece will be performed by Eugene Drucker and Friends: Roberta Cooper\, Eugene Drucker\, Kevonna Shuford\, Susannah Woodruff \nSongs of the Earth is a group of seven musical settings of poetry by the visionary Denise Levertov (1923-97). The themes of the texts revolve around the poet’s passionate concern for the environment\, her close observation of physical phenomena — especially water — and her stark appraisal of humankind’s place in the natural and spiritual order of things. The “Songs” are set for mezzo-soprano and different combinations of stringed instruments; through tone painting and an effort to render the rhythms and pitch contours of the verse\, Eugene Drucker has created music that varies in mood from serenely contemplative to mournful and violent. Levertov was a political and environmental activist\, as well as a deeply religious person; the composer hopes that this small sampling of her work will convey some idea of the range and depth of her contribution to our cultural life. \n  \nPanel | “Our Health\, Our Climate\, Our World” \nA roundtable discussion moderatedby David Wrobel\, Dean of SBU’s College of Arts and Sciences and featuring a panel of environmental and climate academics. She was a winner of the Artists International Competition which sponsored her Carnegie Hall debut recital to wide acclaim. \nEugene Drucker (Composer and Musician) is a founding member of the multiple Grammy Award-winning Emerson String Quartet\, is also a soloist\, author and composer\, and a faculty member at Stony Brook University. His first novel\, The Savior\, was published by Simon & Schuster in 2007 and later appeared in a German translation called Wintersonate. He has created musical settings of poetry by Shakespeare\, Denise Levertov\, and Emma Lazarus for voice and strings. A faculty member at Stony Brook University since 2002\, Mr. Drucker is also currently the Artistic Director of the Berkshire Bach Society. \nKaren Ingram (Panelist) is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher whose work traverses bioart\, biodesign\, and biotechnology\, using genetically modified yeast\, bacteria\, and adapted COVID testing robots to interrogate agency and multi-entity collaboration between human\, robot\, and microbe. She is an exhibiting artist and artist-in-residence at BioBAT Art Space and a 2026-27 Exhibition Fellow at the McColl Center\, and in 2025 she founded the BioArt Studio at Makerspace Charlotte. For this panel\, Karen will speak to how bioart’s multi-entity synergies offer a model for rethinking the entangled systems that shape both human health and planetary climate. \nDr. Ann Kurth (Panelist)\, epidemiologist\, nurse-midwife\, and president/CEO of New York Academy of Medicine\, believes in the power of science to support the health of people\, populations\, and the planet. Her work has focused on HIV\, reproductive health\, and health system strengthening. An elected Fellow of the National Academy of Medicine\, Ann is currently working on a book about climate-resilient health systems. She will talk about the benefits of taking action on climate and health\, and the ways we can all contribute to more resilient health systems and communities. \nSohl Lee (Panelist) is Associate Professor of Art History at Stony Brook University\, an educator\, avid cook\, and cultural historian. Her current research project\, “Seaweed as Method\,”  explores the cultural and ecological histories of seaweed across coastal communities\, asking how art\, foodways\, Indigenous knowledge\, and marine science offer different ways of understanding our relationships with changing oceans. She will discuss miyeokguk\, the Korean seaweed soup traditionally eaten after childbirth and on birthdays\, as a starting point for thinking about how food carries ideas of health\, care\, and cultural memory across generations—and how culinary traditions travel\, adapt\, and connect us to coastal environments. \nSasha Pesci (Panelist) is Assistant Professor of Sustainability Studies at Hofstra University\, where her teaching and research focus on sustainable agriculture and food systems. Her work centers on food justice and is driven by the idea that everyone should have access to healthy food. Recent projects include research on composting in Queens\, NY\, research on food access challenges in Roosevelt\, NY\, and the establishment of a community garden on Hofstra’s campus. During the panel\, she will discuss the value of using community-engaged research methods to ensure that research not only serves academic purposes but also creates real benefits for community partners. \nAnais Reyes (Panelist) is the Deputy Director at the Climate Museum\, whose programs combine art\, learning\, and action to help people feel empowered in the face of climate change. She has collaborated on interdisciplinary programs and presentations with Brooklyn Botanic Garden\, LaGuardia Community College\, the Cincinnati Museum of Art\, the Guggenheim Museum\, and many more. Anais will discuss the importance of arts and culture as a critical tool for building community\, inspiring collective action\, and bringing about climate transformation at the scale we need.  \nKevonna Shuford (Musician) is a vibrant violist who has a passion for collaborative projects. She has collaborated with ensembles such as Boston Philharmonic\, Erie Philharmonic\, Atlantic Symphony and Palaver Strings. Other collaborative efforts have led her to be an artist at the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival\, St. Lawrence String Quartet Seminar\, Encore Chamber Music Program and the Meadowmount School of Music. She has played with artists such as Clive Greensmith\, Janine Jansen\, Yura Lee\, Tai Murray\, Anton Nel\, Philip Setzer\, and Paul Watkins. \nStephanie Wade (Panelist) studies ecology and permaculture to develop teaching and research projects that center food justice and community writing. She will be discussing community gardening projects that allow participants engage in the cultural and material work that is necessary to build better futures. \nSusannah Woodruff (Musician) New York-based mezzo-soprano Susannah Woodruff is a versatile performer with a diverse repertoire\, ranging from baroque zarzuela to contemporary electro-chamber opera. Highlighted performances include engagements with The Dallas Opera\, Berkshire Symphony\, Opera Arlington\, Orpheus Chamber Singers\, Verdigris Ensemble\, Orchestra of New Spain\, ensemblenewSRQ\, Market Square Concerts\, and Miami Music Festival. Her debut album Turning Into Song: A Celebration of American Composers was released in 2023 by Musica Solis. \nDavid Wrobel (Moderator) is the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Stony Brook University and a Professor in the Department of History. He is deeply committed to Stony Brook’s social mobility mission for students and to supporting faculty research and creative activity across the college’s 27 departments that range from the Fine Arts and Humanities\, to the Social and Behavioral\, and Natural and Physical Sciences. A historian of the American West\, David is currently working on a book on the writer John Steinbeck and the struggle to preserve democracy.

Bring your friends\, bring your family\, and catch the ferry!  \n  \n\nHomecoming: For The Harbor is the latest public art project in a series designed by Minneapolis-based artist Amanda Lovelee to use the joyful language of pep rallies\, parades\, and collective celebration to strengthen our relationship with the natural world.  \nThe event combines the efforts and support of multiple artists and participating organizations. Participating artists\, speakers and partners for the NEW October 17 date will be announced soon! \n  \n\nAmanda Lovelee is a civic and environmental artist whose work bridges science\, civics\, and systems change. She creates large-scale public art projects that use joy to spark dialogue about our shared future. Lovelee collaborates across sectors—including with scientists\, planners\, and government agencies. Currently a U.S. Cultural Policy Fellow at Stanford University\, focused on art and culture in climate change work. She is also co-founder of CAIR Lab\, supporting artists in government. Using a climate emotions wheel\, colored notecards\, and string\, you’ll add your feelings to a growing collective map—creating a living portrait of our shared climate experience. No art experience necessary. Just bring your feelings and see where they land.\n \nGarrett Allen\, temperature theater 01\ntemperature theater 01 is a performance experiment in heat\, pressure\, duration\, and cause and effect. A temperature becomes a psychophysical agent\, an environment\, a condition. The work considers the body as a site of climate\, coping\, and consequence. How do we experience change? How does how we handle change change what we experience? \nTanika Williams\, Black Ecologies v. 2: The Field Trip\nBlack Ecologies v. 2: The Field Trip: dream\, design\, and build speculative climate futures with Black Interactive. This day-long event features guided meditation and design-build workshops\, including collaging\, zine-making\, AR animation\, and architectural modeling\n \nSari Nordman\, Anxiety Boutique Activation Dance\nThis activation invites viewers to imagine climate extremes and learn more about the story behind the Anxiety Boutique. \nLisa Ann Schonberg\, The Insects are Present\nA work-in-progress listening experience based on Lisa’s sonic research on the rich compost habitats at Earth Matter on Governor’s Island\, of pollinators at the Lavender Field\, and of ants making their homes under walkways. The Insects are Present is a public installation of a modular\, generative composition system of recording\, processing and playback that prompts interactions between real-time environmental sounds\, human messages\, and Schonberg’s percussion\, with a focus on hidden soundscapes of insects and other invertebrates.\n \nRachel Garber Cole\, My Family Photos\nPlease come and use my family photos to tell me stories from your own life. It will be fun and you can voyeur into someone else’s life while I try and voyeur into yours!
