SUMMARY:House of a Thousand Flowers: Paper Flower-Making Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the history of paper flower making and the symbolism and mythology surrounding flowers. Participants will learn to make unique paper flowers using punches\, colored paper\, watercolor paints\, and markers. Each workshop will introduce different flowers for crafting. Take your creations home or donate them to become an integral piece of Maison Millefleurs\, an illuminated public art piece\, presented by LMCC as part of the 2025 River To River Festival\, premiering this summer in Battery Park.  \nFree Paper Flower-Making Workshops will take place June 7\, June 14\, June 21\, and June 28 at 1pm-2:30pm in Studio A4 at The Arts Center at Governors Island. Click here to RSVP for any of the four workshops. \nAll materials are provided\, and all ages and skill levels are welcome. An adult must accompany children under 12. \n\nRhonda Weppler and Trevor Mahovsky\, based in New York and Toronto respectively\, have worked collaboratively since 2004. Their work has increasingly incorporated communal aspects of craft\, such as DIY tutorial videos\, and virtual crafting bees. Their video project Crafts Abyss was hosted by the Museum of Arts & Design (NYC\, 2021). Other recent activities include the Odette Sculpture Residency at York University (Toronto\, 2022)\, a major temporary outdoor work for OpenArt (Orebro\, Sweden\, 2022)\, as well as solo exhibitions at Susan Hobbs Gallery (Toronto\, 2023)\, The Arts Center at Governors Island (NYC\, 2023)\, Owens Art Gallery (Sackville\, 2024)\, and the Esker Foundation (Calgary\, 2024). Their work is represented in public collections including the Musee d’art Contemporain de Montreal\, Vancouver Art Gallery\, and the National Gallery of Canada.

SUMMARY:Mammal Mountain (Work-in-progress) | Ivy Baldwin Dance
DESCRIPTION:Mammal Mountain\, a multidisciplinary dance commissioned by NYU Skirball (premiere April ‘26)\, includes long-time collaborators: performers Eleanor Smith\, Anna Adams Stark\, Darrin Wright\, Saúl Ulerio\, and choreographer Ivy Baldwin; composition by Justin Jones with an original song by Ryan Tracy; lighting by Amanda Ringger; and visual design in collaboration with artist Inna Babaeva. \nMammal Mountain takes inspiration from Ken Russell’s 1969 film adaptation of D.H Lawrence’s Women In Love\, specifically Gudrun’s “dance with highland cattle”—a ritual between woman and animal\, of seduction\, submission\, fear\, sensuality\, aggression. Visually\, the dance incorporates mammalian hides\, specifically cows—used as second skins\, physical terrains\, paintings\, weapons\, and objects of desire. \nMammal Mountain is commissioned by NYU Skirball\, with additional development support provided by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council\, Marble House Project\, Groundworks\, The Charles and Joan Gross Family Foundation\, Dugas Family Foundation\, and Ivy Baldwin Dance Commissioning Circle Members.  \n\nIvy Baldwin is a NY-based choreographer\, performer\, educator\, and founder of Ivy Baldwin Dance\, Inc. (est. 1999). Commissions include BAM Next Wave\, DTW\, NYLA\, Chocolate Factory\, Abrons Arts Center\, Joyce Theater (Joyce Unleashed)\, American Dance Institute\, The Philip Johnson Glass House\, The Wooden Floor\, Russel Wright Design Center\, and LaMaMa. Select awards include Guggenheim\, Bogliasco and Jerome Foundation Fellowships\, Gibney DiP\, NYFA\, LMCC\, 92Y\, MacDowell\, Yaddo\, Movement Research\, JCAL\, and Trust for Mutual Understanding. The focus of this year’s program is the amazing migratory fish of the Mahicantuck (Hudson River). Students are writing scripts with teaching artists Megan Paradis Hanley and Daniella de Jesus\, composing original songs with singer-songwriter Treya Lam\, and making fish puppets out of marine debris with puppeteer Gregory Corbino. Their work will be performed on May 14 at The Arts Center on Governors Island\, and included in Riverkeeper’s Fish Migration Celebration on June 14. \n\nRiverkeeper protects and restores the Hudson SUMMARY:House of a Thousand Flowers: Paper Flower-Making Workshops
DESCRIPTION:June 7\, 14\, 21\, 28 | 1-2:30pm\nat The Arts Center at Governors Island\, Studio A4 (Upper Level)\n \n\nLearn about the history of paper flower making and the symbolism and mythology surrounding flowers. Participants will learn to make unique paper flowers using punches\, colored paper\, watercolor paints\, and markers. Each workshop will introduce different flowers for crafting. Take your creations home or donate them to become an integral piece of Maison Millefleurs\, an illuminated public art piece\, presented by LMCC as part of the 2025 River To River Festival\, premiering this summer in Battery Park.  \nFree Paper Flower-Making Workshops will take place June 7\, June 14\, June 21\, and June 28 at 1pm-2:30pm in Studio A4 at The Arts Center at Governors Island. Click here to RSVP for any of the four workshops. \nAll materials are provided\, and all ages and skill levels are welcome. An adult must accompany children under 12. \n\nRhonda Weppler and Trevor Mahovsky\, based in New York and Toronto respectively\, have worked collaboratively since 2004. Their work has increasingly incorporated communal aspects of craft\, such as DIY tutorial videos\, and virtual crafting bees. Their video project Crafts Abyss was hosted by the Museum of Arts & Design (NYC\, 2021). Other recent activities include the Odette Sculpture Residency at York University (Toronto\, 2022)\, a major temporary outdoor work for OpenArt (Orebro\, Sweden\, 2022)\, as well as solo exhibitions at Susan Hobbs Gallery (Toronto\, 2023)\, The Arts Center at Governors Island (NYC\, 2023)\, Owens Art Gallery (Sackville\, 2024)\, and the Esker Foundation (Calgary\, 2024). Their work is represented in public collections including the Musee d’art Contemporain de Montreal\, Vancouver Art Gallery\, and the National Gallery of Canada.

Puppets will be crafted from plastic bottle marine debris collected from the Hudson River by the Harbor School‘s shoreline clean-up program\, the Harbor Seals.  \nAll materials are provided\, and all ages and skill levels are welcome. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. \n\nGreg Corbino is an OBIE Award-winning designer with an emphasis on puppetry\, large-scale installation and performance in public space. His designs have been called “gorgeously baroque” by The New Yorker and “crafty and audacious” by The New York Times. His work has been presented at Soho Rep (It’s That Time of the Month\, Give Me Carmelita Tropicana\, The Great Privation)\, The Brooklyn Academy of Music (Cumulus Frenzy)\, Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival (As You Like It) as well as The High Line\, The Architecture League of New York\, The Queens Museum\, The Leslie Lohman Museum of Art\, HEREarts\, Guild Hall\, Art Yard\, and the Smithsonian Institution. Internationally his work has been produced at QueerLab (Rome)\, Duncan Dance Research Center (Athens\, Greece) Togo Village Art Museum (Togo\, Taiwan)\, Other Music Academy (Weimar\, Germany)\, and Festival Mondial des Théâtres de Marionnettes (Charleville-Mézières\, France). His ongoing public space puppet performance\, MURMURATIONS\, draws attention to the environmental impact of plastics with giant puppets crafted of plastic trash collected from New York shorelines and has been supported by the The New York State Council on the Arts\, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council\, and Greenpeace USA. DESCRIPTION:Join curator Meghana Karnik for an exhibition tour followed by a reading of Unity Newspaper (2024)\, a new publication by Hope is a discipline artist Maggie Wong.  \nWong’s installation\, The Red what reading did re-adding stems from the artist’s intergenerational study of the League of Revolutionary Struggle (M-L) and present parts of the publication\, Unity Newspaper (2024)\, published by Snake Hair Press and Orbis Editions. The publication combines sections of the League’s original newspaper (1978-1992) with new writing from League members\, as well as interviews with children raised in the League’s childcare system. The title of Wong’s work borrows from League member and revolutionary poet Amiri Baraka to consider how we come to know a political inheritance. DESCRIPTION:Curator Kiara Cristina Ventura will lead an exhibition tour of Tropical Frequencies at 12:30pm\, followed by an exciting lineup of programs inspired by themes of family\, home\, and ancestral roots woven together in the exhibition.   \nDIDIDADA\, movement workshop by artist Coco Villa\n2:30 – 4:30 pm  \nConducted in follow-along style and guided improvisation\, it is a celebration of nonsensical play. DIDIDADA prioritizes accessibility and silliness to give your mind\, body\, and spirit a sparkly mega boost through a variety of multidisciplinary exercises. It is about catharsis\, getting back into our bodies\, and simply dancing for the joy of moving through hyper warm ups\, routines\, and prompts. Instruction is inspired by Caribbean dance styles\, dance fitness\, somatic movement practices\, and self proclaimed rituals.  \nThis workshop is open to all skill levels\, ages 5 and up. There is no choreography. DESCRIPTION:Teach Me What Love Is: Saturday\, September 14th 2-5 pm\, Upper Gallery\, The Arts Center at Governors Island \nTeach Me What Love Is is a participatory performance series and karaoke workshop that explores the linguistic diversity of the word “love” across languages. Focusing on the often-invisible experience of ESL (English as second language) speakers\, the performance highlights the nuances of language and translation through the shared cultural phenomenon of a ‘love song.’ \nAn ESL performer will lead participants through a song that best represents their notion of love\, teach it and share their relationship with the song in their native languages. Mandarin and Spanish songs\, the languages most spoken other than English in New York City\, will be taught and sung together at LMCC in this karaoke style workshop.  \nJoin us on Saturday\, September 14 from 2 – 5pm\, to learn a love song in Spanish from 2-3:15 pm and Mandarin from 3:45-5pm.  \nRegister here!

DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Opening: Love Tapes by Wendy Clarke\n12-5pm\, Lower Gallery\, The Arts Center at Governors Island \nFirst exhibited as a part of LMCC’s World Views residency program in 1980 at the World Trade Center\, Love Tapes by Wendy Clarke is one of the earliest and actively ongoing projects that LMCC has supported. \nLove Tapes is a participatory video art project that has captured the ideas\, beliefs and stories about love from everyday people. For almost five decades\, Clarke has documented these intimate and vulnerable stories amassing a collection of over 2500 tapes. Each tape is a reminder of our shared humanity and that love unites us all. \nFor the 2024 exhibition season\, LMCC will present digitized archival footage of Love Tapes on our social media platforms and on site at the Arts Center at Governors Island. We might even do a reading or two. Rachel joins other inspirational ‘Outsiders’ like Kathy Acker\, Punk Rock Feminist writer; Leigh Bowery\, avant-garde performance artist; Nina Simone\, legendary singer; Samuel Steward\, renegade Queer author and tattoo artist; Jackie Shane\, trailblazing transgender soul singer\, and more\, enriching the deck with their wisdom and guidance. https://www.outsidertarot.com/ \nOutsidertarot.com    @bobbysweetkitty \n\n4:00pm \nRonit Levin Delgado \nShabbat Brides (Work in Progress) \nPerformance + Screening (20 min) \n“We can only grab another’s hand when our hand is free”  \nMultidisciplinary artist Ronit Levin Delgado\, in collaboration with Katie Cercone and Kelly Shaw Nyala\, invites the audience to enter into our bodies and engage in self-reflection through symbolic movement-based rituals allowing ourselves to focus on the moment\, to dance\, sing and share mother nature’s gifts\, celebrating the abundance and joy of nature.  \nEach performer embodies a hybrid Goddess of Happiness\, reminding viewer’s there’s no need to look outside of ourselves or worship a disembodied idol. Rather\, we can find peace\, joy and happiness by gazing inwards – and claiming what we have culturally disavowed or denied ourselves permission to actualize. A signature of Delgado’s work\, mirrors and reflective surfaces embellish the installation space as three Goddesses dance in choreographed sequences for connection to the spirit realms and nature. \nAs a whole\, the performance invites audience participants to reflect upon their relationship from the spacious naturescape of Governor’s Island\, just a heartbeat away from the city and its perpetual chaos. Audience members are invited to “go within” and join the three Artists in self-reflective exploration of the Goddess within\, an ancient path to liberation… \nThe performance will formally begin in the outdoor gallery space\, whereby the artists will interact with found natural objects on the island\, including each other\, vacillating between contact dance and other dance-based movements. Eventually the piece moves indoors\, where inspired by the natural elements and sounds of magical Governors Island\, a trinity of female artists connect and activate the surroundings through movements based in Yoga – including Breath of Joy meditation\, various nature-based asanas and group exercises. A video installation capturing the water in front of the Statue of Liberty that is also connected to Governors Island will be projected. Reminding us that life is fluid and pure. Water being one of our most essential natural resources\, and one of Mother Earth’s gifts\, it will be a primary symbolic centerpiece within the interactive performance ritual. \n@ronitlevindelgado

DESCRIPTION:RSVP Here! \nSeptember 3\, 6:30pm – 8:30pm  \nRhonda Weppler and Trevor Mahovsky host a special evening event marking the transformation of their installation\, there is nothing you can think that is not the moon\, which currently houses over 300 handmade lanterns the artists started making in 2022. Rhonda and Trevor invite you to take home one of these unique lanterns\, a rare opportunity to receive an artwork and give these lanterns an extended life. The parade of illuminated lanterns leaving the exhibition will create a scattering of light\, reminiscent of traditional lantern festivals.  \nThe making and sharing of these lanterns is an evolving aspect of the duo’s practice\nwhere they create an economy of copying\, sharing and remaking objects. The current lanterns will be replaced by lanterns visitors have made during special workshops with Rhonda\, that replicate objects they have lost or given away. DESCRIPTION:A reading and panel discussion with exhibiting artist Daniel Shieh\, poet Chia-Lun Chang\, and authors Lisa Hsiao Chen and Ly Tran.\nSaturday\, August 12\, 3pm\nUpper Gallery at The Arts Center at Governors Island \nDaniel Shieh and Chia-Lun Chang met as LMCC artists in residence at The Arts Center on Governors Island in 2021 and worked together on the exhibition Where Time Runs Backwards currently on view at The Arts Center at Governors Island. Chia-Lun will read a poem written in response to Daniel’s exhibited sculptures and invite Lisa Hsiao Chen and Ly Tran to read excerpts from their work which touch on their personal experiences of how time and memory pass between generations of immigrant families. \nThe four artists and writers will engage in conversation about how their diaspora experiences and political situations have informed their practice. \n——————————————————— \nDaniel Shieh is a Taiwanese-born artist who investigates what is considered foreign to the United States. Through audio and sculptural installations\, he examines key themes in American culture such as the frontier\, nativism\, and space exploration. His immersive installations often take the form of architectural structures that manipulate spatial perception and alter the power dynamics between visitors. Shieh has exhibited at Socrates Sculpture Park\, SPRING/BREAK\, Franconia Sculpture Park\, Josephine Sculpture Park\, and I-Park Foundation. He has been awarded residencies and fellowships at LMCC’s Arts Center at Governors Island\, Bronx Museum of the Arts\, MASS MoCA\, Anderson Ranch\, Fountainhead\, Millay Arts\, ACRE\, and Wassaic Project. He received an MDes from Harvard University and is based in Brooklyn\, New York. \n  \nChia-Lun Chang is the author of Prescribee\, winner of the 2021 Nightboat Poetry Prize\, and two chapbooks\, An Alien Well-Tamed (Belladonna*\, 2022) and One Day We Become Whites (No\, Dear\, 2016). She has received support from Jerome Foundation\, Vermont Studio Center\, Poets House\, Tofte Lake Center\, and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council among others. She teaches contemporary Taiwanese poetry and fiction at the Brooklyn Public Library. Born and raised in New Taipei City and Puli\, she lives in New York City. \n  \nLisa Hsiao Chen is the author of Activities of Daily Living (W.W. Norton)\, a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award for Debut Novel and the Gotham Book Prize and longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize. It was selected by The New Yorker and Vogue as a Best Book of 2022 and as a Top 10 Book of 2022 by Publishers Weekly. Her book of poems\, Mouth (Kaya Press)\, received an Association for Asian American Studies Book Award. She has received support from the Rona Jaffe Foundation\, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council\, the Center for Fiction\, Art Omi: Writers\, and Vermont Studio Center. Born in Taipei\, she now lives in New York City. \n  \nLy Tran graduated from Columbia University in 2014 with a degree in creative writing and linguistics. She has received fellowships from MacDowell\, Art Omi\, and Yaddo. House of Sticks is her first book.

DESCRIPTION:1pm-4pm\nStudio A4\, Upper Gallery\, The Arts Center at Governors Island \nMeet 12 farmers who have captured the ephemeral nature\, from seed to flower (or vegetable)\, of common\, everyday plants. Experience 12 collages of preserved specimens\, from roots to shoots\, and then learn to make your own flower press to take home. You can create a library of plants and flowers (herbarium) that will delight you forever. \nEarth Matter was conceived in spring 2009 to address the dual problems of resource recovery and healthy soils with a single solution: promoting the local composting of organic waste into a healthy soil amendment. We are passionate about resource recovery and healthy soil as primary goals of a 21st century urban environment.

Sankofa\, a new performance by Anna Parisi\, portrays a young Black woman\, who is contending with the voices in her head and her self-worth in a world where the standards of beauty and value do not match her identity. Parisi is joined by Shareef Kinslow who plays Damon a menacing specter and trickster and Zamo Mlengana who plays Nina\, a kind\, quiet 10-year-old Black girl who returns from her first pool party feeling heartbroken and deceived. \nThe performance takes place in a liminal space. A waiting room. A void within the mind\, where she is remembering a traumatic event from her childhood and processing her experience and thoughts towards healing.
