Miatta Kawinzi (b. 1987) is a Brooklyn-based artist born in Nashville, TN. Her work explores the figure, the inner and outer landscape, and culture as sites of re-imagination and possibility. Her exhibitions include Beneath, Bag Factory, Johannesburg, South Africa (2017); COMM | ALT | SHIFT, Aljira Center for Contemporary Art, Newark, NJ (2017); and Harlem Postcards, Studio Museum, Harlem, NY (2016). Kawinzi has participated in artist residencies at Bag Factory Artists’ Studios in Johannesburg, South Africa, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha, NE, and Greatmore Studios in Cape Town, South Africa. She is also the recipient of funding awards from the South African National Lotteries Commission and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant. Kawinzi holds a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Art & Cultural Theory from Hampshire College and an M.F.A. in Studio Art from Hunter College.
