A nine-month studio residency program that focuses on creative practice development for emerging artists working across all disciplines. This program offers space for experimentation and dialogue with peers and arts professionals, as well as career-advancement opportunities. Workspace encourages creative risk-taking, collaboration, learning and skill-sharing at a critical early stage of an artist’s career and serves between 25 and 30 individuals or collaborative groups annually. Please read the guidelines below and note that applications will only be considered if they are complete, on time, and adhere to all guidelines. A complete application includes complete submission of the Online Application Form AND the Work Sample by the deadline. We are no longer accepting applications for Workspace 2014–2015. Applications for 2015–2016 will open in December 2014.

Please note that Application Guidelines are new for 2014–2015. Emerging visual artists, performing artists, and writers working in all disciplines and genres are eligible to apply for Workspace. Workspace is a good fit for applicants who are:

  • Generating new and original work and engaged in a contemporary dialogue
  • Seeking to foster a rigor of practice by dedicating time and focus to the creative process
  • In need of studio space in which to experiment and develop new work
  • Seeking a community of peers to engage in creative and professional dialogue over nine months in Lower Manhattan
  • Seeking to make connections with a network of curators, presenters, dramaturgs, editors, and other arts professionals working in and around New York City
  • Interested in opportunities to share in-progress work with audiences

Visual artists and writers who work as a collaborative pair (no more than 2) are eligible to apply. Eligible collaborative applicants should submit one application and a joint biography and resume that demonstrate a history of collaboration. Performing arts groups (no more than 3 in a group) are eligible to apply. Eligible performing arts group applicants should submit one application and an integrated biography and resume that demonstrate a history of collaboration or work as a performing arts group. International artists are eligible for this program. Please note that LMCC offers studio space only, NOT living space. If accepted, international participants are responsible for their own visa, travel, living, and housing expenses and arrangements. LMCC can only offer minimal assistance to international residents in securing necessary immigration documents. The small stipend/materials fee will not be sufficient for living expenses. Applicants must choose to apply as a visual artist, performing artist, or writer; applicants cannot apply in multiple categories. Commercially focused artists with a client-based practice should review the resources offered byWorkspace to determine if the program is appropriate for their artistic practice.

Studio Space: Private or semi-private, within a larger shared space, with 24/7 access. Individual studio spaces are approximately 150–300 square feet, equipped with a desk, chair, and basic overhead lighting. Electricity and wireless internet are provided. Heat and air conditioning are provided seasonally during regular business hours. (Housing is not provided).

Dance Floor & Rehearsal Space (for Performing Artists Only): There is a 20 x 24 foot dance floor in the shared space that is dedicated to use for the research and development of movement-based work. It is not available for large-scale rehearsals and presentations. The floor is open 24/7 and reserved for each performing arts participant for approximately 12¬–16 hours per week. Access to 2–4 weeks of dedicated rehearsal space off-site, including a 16 x 32 foot dance floor, is also available to performing arts participants.

Community Building & Professional Development: A unique aspect of Workspace is the opportunity to grow both a network of peers, curators, presenters, editors, dramaturgs and other arts professionals working in and around New York City and to share work with new audiences. - Salon evenings are required weekly group meetings that include one-on-one studio visits, professional development workshops, artist talks, potluck dinners, and more. - Open Studios are required events where the general public is invited to visit your studio and to learn more about your process and works-in-progress.

Publicity: Participants are announced annually and listed on LMCC’s website as well as featured on other digital communication channels. Open Studio events are promoted as part of LMCC’s calendar of Public Programs.

Stipend: A one-time stipend of approximately $1,000 is provided, depending on available funds. (There is NOT a monthly living or housing stipend).

Visiting Artist Status (for Visual Artists Only): Workspace participants have the opportunity to apply for visiting artist status at partner institutions to gain access to specialized facilities and resources. Harvestworks: Electronic media courses, reduced-rate technical assistance, lab/studio access. School of Visual Arts MFA Computer Arts Department: Courses, lab/studio access. New York University — Advanced Media Studio: Inkjet printing, scanning, laser cutting, 3D modeling, courses. Program offerings are subject to change.

  • Artists and writers who will be participating in another residency or professional development program from September 2014–May 2015;
  • Artists and writers who will be matriculated as students at any level from September 2014–May 2015;
  • Artists and writers who have been previously served by LMCC’s StudioscapeWorld ViewsNew Views, or Workspace residency programs;
  • Artists and writers who were selected for any LMCC residency program during 2013.

Workspace participants make a serious commitment to Workspace for the entire nine-month session.Workspace participants are expected to utilize the studio actively and consistently (on average artists are in their studios 20–40 hours per week). In addition, regular attendance at Salon Evenings and participation in public programs like open studios is required. At the close of the program, participants are required to submit a final report containing a narrative about their experience in the program and representative work samples. It is vital to the success of the program that Workspace participants fully take advantage of the unique resources we are able to provide. For this reason, Workspace participants cannot simultaneously participate in another residency, professional development, or degree-granting program while participating in Workspace.

In general LMCC receives more than 1,000 applications for Workspace each year. Applicants are reviewed by juries comprised of arts and literary professionals and artists. The jurors change each year (click here for a list of past jurors). Visual artists, performing artists, and writers are reviewed by separate discipline-specific juries. The juries review and rank all applicants according to the following criteria:

  • Merit of past work, based on submitted Work Sample;
  • Career record, according to narrative Biography and Resume;
  • Proposed projects and ideas, as expressed in Proposal and Statement;

LMCC is committed to maintaining diversity in all of its programs.

The Workspace application is collected through an online application form with submission of work samples (images, video, audio, or writing samples). On the Online Application Form, Applicants are asked to provide:

  • Contact Information
  • Two Professional References (Contact Information Only)
  • Narrative Biography (100 words)
  • One-Page Artist Resume
  • Artist’s or Writer’s Statement (100 words)
  • Proposal (200 words)
  • Work Sample Information

 

Choose one of three Work Sample Options. Follow the guidelines to prepare your Work Sample, and then submit them via the Online Application Form. Option 1 — Digital Images: Eight (8) digital images:

  • Images must be saved as JPEG files, 800 pixels in the longest dimension, at 72dpi.
  • Each image filename must be saved as: “LastName-FirstName-#” (e.g. Smith-John-01.jpg / Smith-John-02.jpg / etc.)
  • During the selection process, images will be viewed one at a time as a projection.
  • Prints, slides, catalogs, original artwork, and other materials are not accepted and will be discarded.

  • 35mm slides or VHS;
  • Original artwork;
  • PowerPoint presentations or slideshows;
  • Handwritten documents;
  • Letters of recommendation;
  • Support materials, including reviews, catalogues, and publications.

Work Samples that do not function or do not follow the above submission guidelines will not be considered. Option 2 — Video/Audio: Four (4) minutes of video/audio:

  • For time-based media only.
  • Applicants may submit up to two (2) clips of video/audio totaling no more than four (4) minutes of footage.
  • During the selection process, videos will be projected.
  • Video/Audio clips are accepted as Weblinks to clips hosted on external sites (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.). We recommend that you submit a video (which can contain one clip or multiple clips) that has been edited down to the allotted time. If your clip is longer than the allotted time, provide the starting (cue) point.
  • Applicants should provide passwords for password-protected videos if applicable.
  • Applicants should ensure that hosted online Work Samples follow the above guidelines and are accessible online at least six months beyond the Application Deadline.

Option 3 — Combination of Images and Video/Audio: Four (4) digital images AND two (2) minutes (1 clip) of video or audio: Follow above instructions for labeling and formatting.

Submit a total of four (4) minutes of video in no more than two (2) clips by providing online links.

  • Applicants may submit up to two (2) clips of video totaling no more than four (4) minutes of footage.
  • Indicate the cue time (i.e. cue 0:00, cue 3:24).
  • During the selection process, videos will be projected.
  • Each clip will be played for no more than the allotted time from the cue point; start times for each clip should mark the beginning of a segment that best represents your work.
  • Video clips are accepted as Weblinks to clips hosted on external sites (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.). We recommend that you submit a continuous clip that has been edited down to the allotted time.
  • Applicants should provide passwords for password-protected videos if applicable.
  • Applicants should caption video Work Samples using this format: Work Sample #, Title, Date, Venue, Cue, Original Running Time; (Example: 1, Dance Sketch, 2010, HERE Arts Center, Cue 4:30, ORT 38:00).
  • Applicants should ensure that hosted online Work Samples follow the above guidelines and are accessible online at least six months beyond the Application Deadline.

Choose one of the following options to submit as a PDF. Applicants may provide any number of works totaling the designated number of pages. The applicant’s name, title of the work, and a page number should appear on each page of the manuscript.

  • Option 1 — Fiction, Non-Fiction, or Script: Up to 20 double-spaced pages in 10–12 point font.
  • Option 2 — Poetry: Up to 10 pages in 10–12 point font.
