Yanira Castro is a Brooklyn-based artist born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 2009, she formed the interdisciplinary collaborative group, a canary torsi, an anagram of her name.

Castro’s work borrows from dance, performance, theater, and visual art often utilizing interactive technology to form hybrid works. Castro’s works include Performance | Portrait, The Invisible Dog Art Center, Brooklyn, NY (2016); Court/Garden, commissioned and presented by Danspace Project, New York, NY (2014); The People to Come, Granoff Center for the Creative Arts at Brown University, Providence, RI (2012), and The Invisible Dog Art Center, Brooklyn, NY (2013); Wilderness, EMPAC, Troy, NY (2010), and Dance Theater Workshop, New York, NY (2010); and Dark Horse/Black Forest, PS122 at The Gershwin Hotel, New York, NY (2009).

Her awards and residencies include Bessie Award for Outstanding Production, Dark Horse/Black Forest (2009); Choreography Fellowship, New York Foundation for the Arts (2016); National Dance Project Production Award, New England Foundation for the Arts (2014) and Returning Choreographic Fellow, Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography (2014-2014). Castro holds a B.A. from Amherst College.
