Xu Bing (b. 1955) is a visual artist born in Chongqing, China who is currently working in both Beijing and New York. Bing’s practice spans from works on single sheets of calligraphy to massive installation works that engage local, global, and human issues. His noteworthy exhibitions include Xu Bing: A Retrospective, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taipei, Taiwan (2014) and Word Play: Contemporary Art by Xu Bing, The Arthur M. Sackler Gallery and the Freer Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C. (1999). Xu has also recently published a new book entitled Book from the Ground, MIT Press (2014).
His awards and recognitions include the Spirit of the City Award, St. John the Divine (2014); the Artes Mundi Prize (2004); and the Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize (2003). Bing earned both his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing. He has also received an Honorary Doctorate from Columbia University.
