Target Margin Theater (TMT) was founded in 1991 on the principle that works of art return us to real truths more powerfully by their divergence from a strict illustration of reality. Through classic and contemporary texts, we seek continuously to expand our conception of what can take place in a theater. One way to understand TMT is in terms of ‘difference.’ We gravitate toward material that is removed from us; from another cultural or historical context, or strange in language or content, or formally adventurous.
Our more than 40 mainstage productions include eleven world premieres and eight company-created works. Recent well-received productions include The Tempest at HERE, Second Language at The Chocolate Factory, and The Really Big Once at the Ontological. Our productions have garnered four OBIE Awards, and enlisted the talents of hundreds of designers and actors. For over 20 years we have worked amongst our many “downtown” peers to share our excitement and further our ideas of difference, mystery and entertainment. Target Margin has also enjoyed creative partnerships with Classic Stage Company, The Vineyard Theatre and The Kitchen. Outside of New York, TMT has been presented at the Spoleto USA Festival, Mass MoCA, and the Bonn Biennale in Germany.
During its Swing Space residency, Target Margin Theater will work with core collaborators to develop a new company-created piece Listen! exploring the intersection of Yiddish Theater and the Russian avant-garde, set to receive its world premiere in the spring of 2013.
