Sam Newsome is a New York-based soprano saxophonist. Newsome has released five critically acclaimed solo saxophone CDs including The Straight Horn of Africa (2014); The Solo Concert: Sam Newsome Plays Monk and Ellington (2013); and The Art of the Soprano, Vol. 1 (2012). Newsome can be heard playing with bands AfroHorn and The Bad Plus – Science Fiction: The Music of Ornette Coleman. He is the recipient of the International Critics Poll Soprano Saxophone award (2014) and was a Jazz Journalist Association’s Soprano Saxophonist of the Year nominee (2015). Newsome is an associate professor of music at LIU in Brooklyn where he teaches courses in jazz improvisation and music history, and directs the school jazz ensembles.
