Rebecca Hackemann is a Brooklyn-based artist born in Karlsruhe, Germany. Hackemann’s work explores the experience of sight, mediated through 19th century optical devices, in a variety of media. Exhibitions include Smoke + Mirrors/Shadow + Fog, Hunter College Times Square Gallery, New York, NY (2009) and Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program Fellowship Exhibition, New York, NY (2001).
Hackemann’s residencies and awards include NYCDOT ArtPartners Grant, New York, NY (2012); Chelsea College of Art Research Grant, London, England (2012, 2014); Manhattan Community Arts Fund, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, New York, NY (2011); and Fondation Valparaiso, Almeria, Spain (2010). Publications include 3-D Cinema and Beyond, Public, ed 47, published by Intellect (Spring 2013) and Stuck Between Disciplines: Notes on Public Art Discourse in New York, e-flux Art&Education Papers (2012). Hackemann received her M.F.A. from Stanford University, CA.
