Richard Maxwell is a New York-based playwright and director, and the artistic director of New York City Players. In 2012, Maxwell was awarded an Obie for his direction of Early Plays by Eugene O’Neill, a collaboration with The Wooster Group, and is in the inaugural class of Doris Duke Artists. He was an invited artist in the 2012 Whitney Biennial, and was also selected for a Guggenheim Fellowship, and two Obie Awards. His plays have been commissioned by the Barbican Centre, London, England; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN; Festival d’Automne, Paris, France; and Performance Space 122, New York, NY. His video works have been exhibited at Greene Naftali Gallery, White Columns, and Anthology Film Archives. A volume of his plays, Plays,1996- 2000: Richard Maxwell, has been published by Theatre Communications Group, which will publish his forthcoming book, Theater for Beginners. Maxwell studied acting at Illinois State University and is currently a resident writer at New Dramatists.
