The Modern Dance Awareness Society is a New York-based collective that brings dance to the public in unexpected ways by creating the opportunity for serendipitous exchange. The Modern Dance Awareness Society transforms environments by turning up the kinesthetic volume, highlighting aspects of the physical space, and actively engaging audiences. This interaction allows the audience to influence and shape the final composition with the performers. Artistic Director Despina Sophia Stamos is a New York-based dancer and choreographer. Her work has been presented in New York City at Dance Theater Workshop, PS122, PS1/MoMA, Judson Church, Chashama, the German embassy, and in public locations such as Times Square, NYC subways, piers, parks, bathrooms, and gardens. Her work has also been presented internationally in Greece, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Brazil, and Puerto Rico. As a dancer, she has worked with various companies and choreographers including Daria Fain/ the Prosodic Body, Chen and Dancers, Hikari Baba and Dancers, Anahi Galante Dance Theater, the National Caravan Theater and more.
