INSPIRIT, a dance company is company of women. As our name suggests, INSPIRIT creates contemporary dance works imbued with spiritual exuberance, ancestral strength, and startling perception. The works created by and for the company consistently stretch the artists’ understanding of body and performance. The rich movement vocabulary draws from the ensemble’s wide-ranging experiences, from postmodern forms to traditional West African dance, from ballet to yoga. In addition to engaging with the community, the multi-dimensional dance works forge a visceral and emotional connection by expressing our collective hopes, struggles, and truths.
Previous performances include Christal Brown and INSPIRIT: The Evolution, BAAD! Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance, Bronx, New York, 2012; Inspirit: Informal showing, Middlebury College, VT, 2012; and Untitled – Dance Here Modern, Choreographed by INSPIRIT, a dance company, Andrew Freedman Home, Bronx, New York, 2012.
During their Swing Space residency, INSPIRIT, a dance company will develop a new piece that deals with the different perceptions of them as a company of individual women that come from different backgrounds of dance styles, ethics, and thoughts. They plan to choose a theme that celebrates and investigates these major differences while each member contributes personal stories and choreographic ideas. They have always and still plan to showcase their presence in the dance world as strong eclectic women.
