“Collaborators Jessie Bear and Erin Mee are paving the way to a profound immersive theatrical experience where performance and life intertwine effortlessly. Let them begin again, and again, and again.” – Show Buisness Weekly, June 11, 2014, Sydney Arndt
This Is Not A Theatre Company is a New York-based organization that stretches the conventional understanding of theatre by changing the relationships that “plays” create between performer, performance, and audience. The organization sets productions in nonconventional spaces, invites audiences to participate in the live creation of “plays”, and experiments with different media sources to disseminate content. Past productions include Pool Play, set in a natatorium; A Serious Banquet, an interactive dinner party; Ferry Play, a smartphone audio experience; two Happenings; and a Dada cabaret exploring readymade theatre and chance encounters. TINATC has received funding from LMCC’s Manhattan Community Arts Fund, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and administered by LMCC (2015). Founding Artistic Director Erin B. Mee has directed productions at the Public Theater, New York Theatre Workshop, SoHo Rep, HERE, The Magic Theatre, The Guthrie Theater, and with Sopanam in India. She is the author of Theatre of Roots: Redirecting the Modern Indian Stage, co-editor of Antigone on the Contemporary World Stage, and has written numerous articles for TDR, Theatre Journal, American Theatre Magazine. She is a member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, the Lincoln Center Theatre Director’s Lab, and is a Usual Suspect at New York Theater Workshop. She is Assistant Professor/Faculty Fellow of Dramatic Literature at NYU.
