The Dance Cartel, launched in 2011, is a New York-based company deeply committed to cultivating a fresh movement vocabulary that is accessible, expressive, and radically innovative. Without sacrificing technical expertise, The Dance Cartel employs the social nature of dance, giving audiences the electric charge of a party while satisfying the spectator’s sense of high-concept aesthetics. There is no separation between audience and performer; the choreography exists in and around viewers, awakening their innate sense of movement. The Dance Cartel has performed in diverse spaces including Ace Hotel NY; Littlefield; Manderley Bar at the McKittrick Hotel; Museum of Art and Design; Ars Nova; and Espaco Xisto, Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. The Dance Cartel has had sold-out shows in residency at Ace Hotel NY with the immersive dance event OntheFloor. Ani Taj, choreographer and founder of The Dance Cartel, creates movement fueled by research trips to Brazil and inspired by Carnaval. Taj’s work has been featured in music videos for Yoko Ono, Reggie Watts, Vic Mensa, Sarh, The Sway Machinery, and appeared on Conan and The Late Late Show. Her live theatre and experimental musical credits include Better for Night, Randy Weine; The Nomad, Liz Swados, The Flea; Good Men Wanted, Kevin Armento, Ars Nova; and Love’s Labour’s Lost, Shakespeare in the Park (2013). Ani’s choreography has also been presented at Velocity Dance Center, Seattle, WA; La MaMa Moves! Festival; The Brooklyn Museum; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Jane Bailey Memorial Garden (NYRP in partnership with BAM); Art in Odd Places; and Red Hook Festival. TDC is the recipient of LMCC’s Manhattan Community Arts Fund, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and administered by LMCC (2014); BAX Summer Residency; and the New York Live Arts Studio Series residency.
