Carlos de Jesus is an artist and educator born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York’s Spanish Harlem. Understanding both the strong points and the hardships of his upbringing, he realized that his local and personal circumstances could be transformed by art into a more global statement.

His documentaries include The Devil is a Condition, examining spontaneous protests against substandard housing conditions in New York City (1972); That Old Gang of Mine (1996); and Garifuna Nation (2012). He programmed the weekly Hispanic variety series IMAGENES (Images) from 1973-76 at the New Jersey Public Television network and has collaborated on the long-term telecommunications project FIRST WORLD ORDER, which focuses on visual manifestations of the African Diaspora.
