Brendan Fernandes is a New York- and Toronto-based artist born in Nairobi, Kenya. His work investigates the plasticity of personal identity, foregrounding in particular the process of migration. Fernandes’s performances include Stage It! (Part 3) – Scripted, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2014); In Practice: Chance Motives, Sculpture Center, NY (2014); and Builders, National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, ON (2012). Fernandes’s awards and residencies include Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Residency, FL (2014); Fire Island Artist Residency, NY (2012); Artist Residency, ZKM | Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe, Germany (2011); Ontario Finalist, Sobey Art Award, NS (2010); and New Commissions Recipient, Art in General, NY (2010). He received his B.F.A. from York University and M.F.A. from The University of Western Ontario.
