Ander Mikalson (b. 1983) is a New York-based artist born in Santa Monica, CA. Her work focuses on creating drawings based on sounds and performances. Her open-ended and collaborative way of working challenges the role hierarchical processes play in contemporary art, and shifts the focus to the importance of collective creativity in our time. She has written scores for A Cyclone, Tensta Konsthall, Stockholm, Sweden (2012); The Big Bang, St. James’s Church, Richmond, VA (2012); Two Dinosaurs, Queens Museum, Queens, NY (2013) and Three’s Company for Eight Performers, Churner and Churner, New York, NY (2014). She was an artist-in-residence at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Skowhegan, ME (2012). Her fellowships include the Professional-Development Fellowship in the Visual Arts, College Art Association, Richmond, VA (2012); Graduate Fellowship, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, VA (2011) and Fellowship and Residency, Mildred’s Lane, Beach Lake, PA (2011). She was also a grant recipient from the Art Matters Foundation, New York City (2012). Mikalson received a B.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a B.A. and an M.F.A. from the Virginia Commonwealth University.
