The Allen|Body Group is a cross-disciplinary effort to create physical explorations of our world. Co-conspirators in this work include poets, musicians, photographers, neuro-scientists and elite alpine climbers.
Choreographer Malinda Ray Allen uses her undergraduate work in cognitive linguistics (Cornell 1998) to create unique physical vocabularies. After moving to New York in 2004, Allen’s dance-monologue Antigen was selected for Fresh Tracks at Dance Theater Workshop. In 2006, she received DTW’s Bessie Schonberg/First Light Commission for her scripted dance work Einstein’s Dreams.
Key collaborations include: roam – a solo in two voices with Kelly Zen-Yie Tsai of HBO Def Poetry Jam and Christal Brown of InSpirit Dance Company (DNA – 2007), The Manuals with poet/violinist Alicia Jo Rabins (Movement Research at BAAD – 2007), and I See Beyond the Black Sun with Arrington de Dionyso (TheaterLab 2009). She has shown work at Chez Bushwick, Dixon Place, PS 122, the New Museum, and the Director’s Lab at Lincoln Center. Malinda is a 2008 Fellow of the Urban Artist Initiative/NYC, a 2010 Tofte Lake Emerging Artists Resident.
Her current experiment is The Part of Me In You, an evening-length solo dance-essay contrasting the visceral experience of love with the neuroscience of lust, attachment, and heartache. This work is directed entirely by the audience.
While at 14 Wall Street, the Allen|Body Group will conduct thought experiments to develop PARADISE, an action-based society. The project questions our basic assumption that the most important events in our culture take place while we’re sitting still.
