“Throughout [Court/Garden], Castro maintains an interesting tension between high expectations and low-level means of delivery, between firm control of things and awkward execution, between glittering artifice and banal transparency, between seductive beauty and those things that make you seriously question what you find beautiful, why you do and who the hell you think you are to judge.” – Infinite Body, Eva Yaa Asantewaa
Court/Garden is a three-act dance performance that is inspired by the imperial ballets of Louis XIV’s French Court, the spectatorship of the proscenium stage and the presentation of video feeds as cultural, social and political frames of experience. The audience’s relationship to the performance is in constant flux, investigating the structures behind the act of watching and being seen.
Yanira Castro/a canary torsi invite audiences to an open rehearsal of Court/Garden with a reimagined third-act that will be performed in its entirety in the upcoming River To River Festival.

Court/Garden was developed as part of Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Extended Life Dance Development program made possible in part by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. LMCC.net
The creation of Court/Garden is made possible, in part, by the Danspace Project 2014-15 Commissioning Initiative, with support from the generous individuals who give to the Creation Fund. Danspace Project’s 2014-15 Commissioning Initiative is a core component of the Choreographic Center Without Walls (CW2). As the framework through which Danspace presents and commissions new work in all of its programs, CW2 provides context, curatorial support, and space for choreographers and their works.
CG is also made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts. CG is also supported by New Music USA, made possible by annual program support and/or endowment gifts from the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, New York State Council on the Arts, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Paisley Powell Elebash Fund, and Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation. To follow the project as it unfolds, visit the project page. In addition, CG is made possible by a Jerome Foundation 50th Anniversary Grant and an individual artist grant from Bossak/Heilbron Charitable Foundation.
