Join LMCC for Open Studios with Aki Sasamoto at LMCC’s Arts Center at Governors Island.
Aki Sasamoto creates sculptures and installations that act as performative elements for theatre productions and performances in galleries or alternative spaces. Working with collaborators Madeline Best (artist, performer, lighting designer), Jessica Weinstein (actor), and several additional invited scientists and visual artists, Sasamoto plans to interact with everyday objects and what she calls “precarious sculptures” during her residency at LMCC’s Art Center. Each collaborator will come in separately to workshop a theoretical or practical concept, varying from something as basic as “working with a tall box” to attempting to “physicalize a mathematical theory.”
For the Open Studio, Sasamoto plans to develop a short performance, utilizing all of these concepts to weave a narrative. The work will continue to be developed for a presentation at JTT Gallery in November 2014.
Following Sasamoto’s Open Studio, please join us for an Open Studio with a canary torsi / Yanira Castro in the neighboring studio at 3:00pm.
