Where is the Workspace Residency program currently located?

The 2008-2009 Workspace Residency will be located on the 29th floor of the historic Equitable Building at 120 Broadway in the Financial District. Former locations include the World Trade Center, the Woolworth Building, the World Financial Center, all in Manhattan and DUMBO in Brooklyn.

Who can apply?

Workspace is open to emerging and early-career professional artists working in all disciplines including Drawing, Painting, Photography, Sculpture, Film/Video, Installation/Mixed Media, Sound, Performance and New Media/Computer Arts. And emerging and early-career professional writers working in all genres including fiction, non-fiction, playwriting/screenwriting, and poetry.

This opportunity is also open to collaborative pairs (no more than two (2) people). Collaborative pairs should submit one application for both artists.

Artists and writers who will be participating in another residency program or who will be enrolled as students at the undergraduate or graduate level from Sept 2008 – May 2009 are not eligible.

Can international artists and writers apply?

Yes, international artists are eligible for this program. Please be aware that LMCC offers studio workspace only, NOT living space. International artists are responsible for their own visa, travel, living and housing expenses and arrangements. LMCC can only offer minimal assistance to international artists in securing necessary immigration documents. The small stipend/materials fee will not be sufficient for living expenses.

How are the studios equipped?

There is access to the studios 24/7. Studio space is approximately 250 square feet. Each studio is partitioned within a larger, shared space, but does not have a door. Studios are furnished with a desk and a chair, and equipped with wireless internet access and basic overhead lighting. There is heating during regular building hours, but no air conditioning. There are lockers for storage and a slop sink. Studios are not open to the public.

Is there access to facilities for electronic, digital, and new media artists?

There is the opportunity to apply for Visiting Artist Status at School of Visual Arts, New York University, or Harvestworks where artists have access to different multimedia facilities in exchange for leading a workshop and/or lecture. For details on these opportunities, click here.

Is there a stipend?

There is a modest, one-time, stipend of about $1,000 depending on funding. However, there is NO monthly living stipend.

Do you provide a place for artists and writers to live during the program?

No. Workspace provides studio workspace only, not living space. All participating artists are responsible for securing their own housing a reasonable distance from the studios for the 9-month duration of their residency.

What opportunities will I have to show my work to an audience?

There are opportunities to present work to the general public including presence on LMCC's website, a Works-in-Progress Open Hours (coinciding with NYC art fairs) and an end-of-session Open Studio Weekend. Artists are required to participate in these public programs. During the most recent Open Studio Weekend over 1,000 visitors came through the studios. Throughout the residency, there are also weekly Salon Evenings where guests - gallerists, curators, artists, writers, and collectors are invited to share their experience with resident artists in these informal discussions and studio visits.

How long is the residency program?

9 months long, September through May.

How many participants are in the program?

Depending on the space we are in, each session has about 10-15 visual artists and 2-5 writers. We received over 1,000 applications for our last session. You can also check out our most recent residents.

How are artists selected?

Artists and writers will be selected for one 9-month session by a panel of arts or literary professionals, artists, writers, and LMCC staff. Decisions are based on specific criteria: 1) Artistic merit of past work, 2) Career stage, 3) Proposed projects/ideas, and how work and proposal relates specifically to the Workspace program, 4) We will consider the diversity of the group in final selection. After the selection panel chooses finalists, an interview follows. Preference will be given to artists with flexible and active practices who are currently without studios and will maximize the use of space, time, and resources.
